What is the difference between New Student Orientation/Parent Registration and University Orientation?
New Student Registration/Parent Orientation is a one-day session designed to enable new students to be advised and register for classes. Parents have an opportunity to learn about University resources, how the University operates, and to develop relationships with faculty and staff. Attendance is required for students but optional for parents. However it is recommended that parents attend.
University Orientation is a series of activities designed to help students adjust to academic life at Alcorn State University. The activities are carried out over several days immediately before classes begin in the fall.
What is cost the to attend New Student Registration/Parent Orientation?
There is no charge, to students or parents, to attend New Student Registration/Parent Orientation.
Why is attendance required for New Student Registration and University Orientation?
Students are required to attend New Student Registration in order to be properly advised and select classes well before classes begin. This will enable students to purchase textbooks, take care of other needs, and start classes without missing any classes. Attendance at University Orientation is required because it provides students with important information about University procedures and services as well as key information that is vital to making a smooth adjustment to academic life and communal living. University Orientation is a non-credit course and a graduation requirement. All students must complete it in order to graduate.
What if I am unable to attend New Student Registration or University Orientation?
All new students are required to attend New Student Registration. If an emergency prevents your attendance, you must call or write the College for Excellence and explain why you are unable to attend. You should call the College for Excellence at (601) 877-6226 and complete advisement and registration with the assistance of a staff member. This should be completed prior to the beginning of classes.
Attendance at University Orientation is a graduation requirement. Make-up sessions will be scheduled to the extent possible.
What if I expect to take classes on the Vicksburg or Natchez Campuses?
If you are a student taking courses at the University for the first time, you must still complete the early registration process at New Student Registration. However, you may be exempted from attending University Orientation. You should contact the College for Excellence to determine if you qualify for an exemption.
Do I need to bring anything specific to University Orientation?
Several functions during the University Orientation program are considered formal functions requiring that students be dressed in business attire; suits and tie or dresses, pants suits, or skirt/blouse. Please consult the list of Items, What to Bring With You, that was mailed to you in the admissions process for detailed information on what to bring.
When can students move into the residence halls?
Students can begin moving into the residence halls on Sunday, August 12.
When do classes begin?
Fall 2007 classes begin on Monday, August 20. All students should be in attendance with their textbooks.
