GENERAL STUDIES
Department of Education and Psychology

The General Studies Program is an interdisciplinary liberal arts program of study designed for non-traditional students with diverse interests. The following guidelines apply to students desiring a degree in General Studies:

  1. Incoming Freshmen can not choose General Studies as a major unless they meet the requirements for non-traditional student status.
  2. All students desiring to enter the General Studies program must have met regular admission requirements for Alcorn State University and have achieved upper division status. Students must also have been out of school for five years or more and have had three to five years of relevant work experiences.
  3. Any student who has been out of school for five or more years and returns, can be classified as a non-traditional student. Any student who has been admitted to the university based on age, GED, work experience, or professional experience can also be classified as non-traditional.
  4. Any Student who is catergorized or termed "Non-traditional" will be permitted to enroll in or be admitted to the General Studies Program at any point during matriculation.

The following curriculum leads to the Bachelor of Science in General Studies from the Department of Education and Psychology.

Graduation Requirements:
  1. Each student must pass the standard university technology exam.
  2. Each student must demonstrate the ability to communicate at the collegiate level through the format of a standardized test such as ' the PPST (English and Writing). Students must score at the same level required for teacher certification.
  3. Each student must successfully pass the multi-skilled department General Studies Exit Examination.
  4. Each student must pass the English Proficiency Examination.
