Alcorn State and Cultural Crossroads Work
Together
Felicia Harried, Alcorn
State’s Webmaster, is also the President of Cultural Crossroads
organization in Port Gibson, Miss. Recently she wrote a letter to Dr.
Clinton Bristow to commend members of the International Multicultural
Student Organization for the outstanding volunteer service they have
rendered to Mississippi Cultural Crossroads.
Cultural Crossroads
recently sponsored a program called Family Reading: Eating is
Fundamental. It has brought Claiborne County Families together one night
a week to read and discuss books which had food and culture as a central
theme. This program was a component of the Take Part project and also
one of the series of activities leading up to the opening of the
traveling Smithsonian exhibit Key Ingredients: America by Food,
which Cultural Crossroads will host January 17-February 13, 2005.
“It seems International
Multicultural Student Organization was looking for community service
opportunities and a local student who had participated in several of our
programs mentioned our organization. The organization president
contacted Cultural Crossroads and spoke with executive director Patty
Crosby about how they could be of service.” wrote Felicia Harried in her
letter to Dr. Bristow.
Trena Boyd, Macy Lamela,
Margo McLeod and Njuguna Ngugi arrived promptly on the second night of
the six-week series and immediately joined the activity serving wherever
they were needed.
“Their enthusiastic,
energetic attitudes were refreshing and the extra hands to deal with 25
six to ten year olds were a godsend! Even when that program ended, the
students asked if there was anything else they could help us with, and
Margo and Macy did return to help with our Beast Feast and Sweet Safari
fundraiser in November. Tamika Starks, an Alcorn student who is not a
member of the International Student Organization, also assisted us on
the final night of the reading program and served admirably.” Mrs.
Harried wrote.
“The spirit of service
exemplified by these students is a credit to the university and its
communiversity ideals. They brought the Alcorn profile to life at
Cultural Crossroads. I pray you continue to promote and instill not only
academic excellence but civic duty, integrity and personal
responsibility in the students at Alcorn. Our communities benefit
greatly from the contributions of such well-rounded citizens. I look
forward to other opportunities where Alcorn and Cultural Crossroads can
work together for the mutual benefit of our respective constituents.”
The Alcorn family is
encouraged to see the Smithsonian exhibit while it is at Cultural
Crossroads. Please contact Felicia Harried at 601-877-3977 for details
