Spotlight on Excellence
Alcorn State University in the National
Spotlight for its Success in Improving Graduation Rates of its Students
Institution’s Academic Agenda Serves as Overarching Concept Driving all
Programmatic Efforts, and Directly Responsible for 10-percent Increase
in Graduation Rates from 1998 to 2004
In a report that challenges the
conventional wisdom concerning college and university graduation rates,
The Education Trust released data this week and identified Alcorn State
University, in particular, as an institution doing an excellent job in
not only recruiting students, but ensuring that they graduate as well.
Based in Washington, D.C., The Education
Trust is a national organization established in 1990 by the American
Association for Higher Education as a special project to encourage
colleges and universities to support K-12 reform efforts. During a
special announcement in the nation’s capital, the organization released
its college results online in an announcement yesterday titled
Similar Institutions Aren’t
that Similar When it Comes to Student Success.
The organization paints a bleak picture
for the current status of graduation rates at many colleges and
universities across the United States. Its analysis also finds that
graduation rates are much worse for minority students. However, it
lauds Alcorn State University and its consistent success over the past
several years. From 1998 to 2004, the graduation rate at Alcorn State
University has improved by 10 percent, according to the report, making
the historically black institution one of the most successful in the
nation at ensuring that its students graduate and are well-positioned
for success at the post-graduate and professional school level. Alcorn
State’s Academic Agenda is directly responsible for this
success.
