Dr. Acholonu Lectures in China as a Visiting Scholar Dr. Alex D. W. Acholonu, professor of Biology at Alcorn State University, Mississippi was one of those selected to participate in a two-week Academic Scholar Program in China as a Visiting Scholar to lecture in an institution of higher learning. Dr. Acholonu lectured from May 20 to June 5, 2005. He taught Parasitology at Huaiyin Teachers University located in Huaiyin city in the Jingsu Province of the Peoples Republic of China and with a student population of about 12,000. He also gave an impromptu lecture to nursing students at the School of Health in Huaiyin at the request of the Dean of the institution when he was taken to visit the institution. There he lectured them on the human liver fluke(Clonorchis sinensis), a parasite prevalent in China, and several other far East countries. Dr Acholonu said that it was a very rich and rewarding experience. He added that many of the students were interested in coming to the USA to study. The University authorities would welcome an exchange program with Alcorn State University and any other universities in the US that would allow their students to visit China and the Chinese students to come to their universities. Dr Acholonu reported that the students, faculty, and administrators were warm and friendly and did not spare any effort to see that he and Dr. Adolph Grundman from Metropolitan College of Denver, CO assigned to teach there with him, were happy and comfortable. To add to their hospitality, the last two days of their sojourn in China were spent in prearranged sight seeing tours to some rich historical places.
Dr. Acholonu recommends and urges Alcorn State University authorities to consider setting up an exchange program with Huaiyin Teachers University.
The Alcorn State University Millennium Club was recently organized to appeal to young alumni ages 25-40. In February during the Mid-Winter Conference a small group of young alumni met with Mr. Arthur Brooks, Executive Director of the Foundation to develop plans for the organization and to encourage young alumni at the local levels to begin planning activities that are more attractive to this age group. Several ideas were shared and those in attendance left the meeting optimistic about what the club would offer to young alumni. The overall mission of the organization is to offer life success opportunities to our young alumni and give them the opportunity to network with one another and to share experiences and knowledge that will continue to help them to develop into productive citizens. A $50.00 membership will offer a two-fold membership in the Millennium Club and the ASU National Alumni Association. Incentives may include a membership souvenir, hotel and car rental discounts, special tailgating events, special athletic packages, access to chat rooms with Alcorn alumni, and more. Members will be expected to offer volunteer services to the university and to serve as mentors for students who will be a part of the student/alumni council at the university. The first official Millennium Club social was held at Dreams Nightclub in Washington, D.C. The initial request for this event was made by young alumni James McDonald ‘91, who is vice-president of the ASU Metropolitan Alumni Chapter. Upon his request a proposal was submitted to the university’s Foundation office. Through the assistance of the Foundation and the president’s office a proposal for sponsorship was submitted. Mr. Warren Thompson, president and CEO of Thompson’s Hospitality accepted the request and sponsored the food and beverages. Thompson’s Hospitality is the largest minority owned food service company in the United States. A special thanks to Mr. Thompson and his staff for assisting us in the reception. The young alumni members of the Jackson Alcorn Alumni Chapter recently got together to tour the International Museum of Muslim Cultures and afterwards had lunch. Coordinator, Katalba Allen ‘98 said the event was educational and provided the opportunity for young alumni to get together. During the Alumni Weekend activities, several young alumni from the Vicksburg area met with Millennium Club Coordinator, Janice Gibson to discuss the organization. All Class Presidents from 1995-2005 should contact the ASU Office of Alumni Affairs at 601-877-6323.
