Advertising for Open or Vacant Positions

The following procedure must be followed when posting a vacant position in your department in order to comply with university policy and Mississippi Department of Labor standards.

  1. Prepare a position description for the open or vacant position
  2. Forward a copy of the position description to the Director of Human Resources for posting
  3. Forward a copy pf the position description to the Office of University Relations for posting on the Weekly Bulletin
  4. List the open or vacant position with the Mississippi Employment Security Commission, i.e. “Job Service”, in addition to any other advertisement medium used.

ASU College for Excellence has an immediate opening for the position of Administrative Assistant (Student Support Services Program). Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in office administration preferred, Associate degree in secretarial science or similar field accepted. Three years or more secretarial experience desired, five or more years required if no degree. Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet applications are needed with emphasis given to mail merge capabilities. Excellent keyboarding skills (60 wpm minimum). Demonstrated ability to effectively set up and maintain multiple filing systems required. Familiarity with MS Power Point and Publisher as well as Acrobat desired; excellent organizational, interpersonal, presentation, proofreading, and communications skills, both oral and written, are required. Duties: Report to Program Director. Type all administrative correspondence and reports; compile and type all reports on students, project administration, and other aspects of the program as may be required for effective operations. Initiate all project purchase requisitions and track the timely receipt and effective use and control of goods and services. Maintain the operating ledger of expenditures; serve as the receptionist for all program staff. Prepare all personnel documents for the staff including leave requests, monthly leave summaries, payroll documents; supervise student assistants. Other duties as assigned by the Director.

Assist in the administration and interpretation of instruments measuring the effectiveness of academic support services by participants. Assesses participants to determine the types of academic support needed. ASU Center for Information Technology Services seeks a highly motivated, results-oriented Programmer/Data Auditor to query and Oracle-based integrated suite of administrative software, SunGard SCT's Banner, for data consistency, redundant data identification and report generation. Responsibilities include: provide technical support for one or more Banner teams (Student, Finance, Financial Aid, Human Resources or Advancement); interface with technical and end users to resolve errors, enhance efficiency or implement new functionality; specify and code ad hoc reports using SQL, PL/SQL or other report generation software; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:   Bachelor's degree in Computer or Information Sciences with relevant experience, experience in programming using C/C++, VB, Java and/or VB scripting and ASP, solid understanding of database design and E-R models, at least 1 year experience with Oracle 9i and higher databases, strong knowledge of PL/SQL and SQL, SQL*loader and utilities, experience in building client/server business applications, any formal training with oracle database programming a plus.

ASU Center for Information Technology Services seeks a highly motivated, results-oriented Computer Support Specialist to provide technical support primarily to students. This position reports to the director of CITS. Responsibilities include: install, troubleshoot and repair computers, network switches and peripheral equipment for students with minimal down or turn-around time; install software and resolve software problems related to network connectivity; interact with and recommend vendors and products based on price/service; maintain computer labs and public area computer equipment; and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:   Thorough knowledge of Windows 98/2000/XP, knowledge of networking fundamentals, A+ certification a plus, 1 - 3 years experience maintaining/troubleshooting laptops, desktops, printers and other peripherals, must be able to lift up to 50lbs., must possess excellent customer service skills, ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks efficiently and devise creative and timely solutions to problems.

ASU Center for Information Technology Services seeks a motivated, results-oriented and determined Systems Administrator/Database Administrator. ASU  School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied Sciences has an immediate opening for the position of  Coordinator of Workforce Education Leadership & Mid-South Partnership Articulating Programs.  The successful candidate will work closely with the Office of the Dean, School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied  Sciences (AREAS) and the Vice President for Academic Affairs to provide academic leadership, management, and overall coordination for the ASU/MSU joint Master’s Degree Program in Workforce Education Leadership (WEL).  

Qualifications:   Doctorate Degree in Education, Technology Education, Workforce Development, or related fields with at least three years experience in program administration on the graduate level.  The successful candidate should also have previous experience with advisement and enrollment management on the graduate level.  Applicants must have excellent written and oral communication skills, good computer literacy skills, and demonstrate an ability to work with university, continuing education professionals, and community college officials.

The ASU School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied Sciences has an immediate opening for the position of Research Administrator. The position reports to the Dean, School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied Sciences. The Administrator will promote research funding through interaction with federal and state officials and with private entities.  He/she will oversee the day to day operations of the Agricultural Research Program at the University. 
The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate in agricultural science, knowledge in the field of biotechnology and a record of accomplishments that support appointment as Research Administrator. A minimum of five years’ experience in research program development and implementation are required.  Must possess knowledge of issues and trends in higher education, particularly related to research.  Research/Administrative experience at a university will be advantageous.   The incumbent must be a team builder and a team leader.

The ASU Mississippi River Research Center has an immediate opening in Watershed Biogeochemistry. The incumbent will conceive, plan, and implement biogeochemistry research programs emphasizing: (1) the role of biogeochemical process in connected ecosystems of landscapes and receiving waters of the southern Independent streams in Mississippi; (2) factors controlling biogeochemical processes in watersheds in southwest Mississippi, especially the Homochitto watershed; and (3) comparative related studies such as nitrogen and phosphorus cycling and transport in watersheds and understanding riparian, fluvial, hyporheic or in-stream processes. The incumbent must have demonstrated abilities to analyze, synthesize, and publish the results of research on biogeochemistry. Interacts with, and provides assistance to, colleagues, and peers in related aspects of the Center’s watershed hydrology/management research. Presents research results at scientific meetings, workshops, and seminars. Trains students, interns, postdoctoral fellows, and/or visiting investigators in the Center’s research program in biogeochemistry. Participates in the Centers’ public education programs.

Software Engineer Research Associate. Applicant must have Ph.D. or M.S. in Computer Science/Software Engineering or closely related discipline. Experience in specifying, architecting, designing, verifying, implementing, and testing software components and systems languages, environments and areas such as: C, C++, and Java; Python, and Perl; Windows and Java environments. Experience with J2EE development, Net web application development, project management, database design and administration on engines such as DB2, Oracle, or MS SQL Server. Excellent oral and written communication skills; substantive track record indicating extensive practical experience. Track record of scholarly research in the area is a plus. 

Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Expert. Applicant must have Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or closely related discipline relevant to image-processing, pattern recognition, and Geo-spatial information systems. Applicant should have a track record of scholarly research n the area, excellent oral and communication skills; substantive publications in national and internationally scholarly journals and conference; track record indication an ability to secure funding for research and conduct laboratory and curriculum development.  

Statistician. Applicant must have Ph.D. in Statistics, Bio-statistics or closely related area. Applicant should have a track record of scholarly research in the area, excellent oral and written communication skills; substantive publications in national and international scholarly journals and conference; track record indicating an ability to secure funding for research and conduct laboratory and curriculum development.


ASU Cooperative Extension has an immediate opening for a qualified Chief Programmer.  Must have a Master's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Engineering, or related field plus 3 years of experience in the position offered or 3 years experience developing applications.
