Give the
Gift of a Lift This Holiday Season
Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk
The holiday season between Christmas and New Year’s is one of the
deadliest and most dangerous times of the year due to an increase
in impaired driving.
If you are organizing or hosting a party
this month and plan on serving alcoholic beverages, remind your
guests to designate their sober driver in advance and provide a
variety of non-alcoholic beverages to those designated drivers.
Then at the end of the party, make sure all of your guests leave
with a sober driver or make arrangements to get them home safely.
Always buckle up – it’s your best defense
against an impaired driver and remember, “Friends Don’t Let
Friends Drive Drunk.”

Institute of Arts and Letters Now Accepting Nominations
The Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters (MIAL) is now
seeking nominations for awards to outstanding Mississippi artists
for work shown, published, or performed in 2005.
MIAL awards honor living Mississippi artists for their
achievements in the fields of fiction, non-fiction, musical
composition (concert and popular), photography, poetry, and visual
arts. Both current residents and former ones who have continuing,
significant ties to the state are eligible.
Current and new MIAL members may submit nominations
until January 15, 2006. Awards will be presented at the annual
awards gala on
June 10, 2006,
in Oxford.
The MIAL awards competition is a juried one.
Out-of-state-judges prominent in their fields select a winner in
each category, from those nominated. Winners receive cash prizes
and Mississippi-made gifts.
MIAL hopes to increase membership and broaden
participation in the awards selection process this year. “We’re
eager to have new members join the Institute and help recognize
the superior work of our state’s artists,” Membership Chairman
Donzell Lee says.
See www.ms-arts-letters.org to join MIAL and to get
complete instructions for making nominations. Annual dues for an
individual membership are $35.
Artists honored in past years include Ellen Douglas,
Walker Percy, Willie Morris, Richard Ford, Barry Hannah, Samuel
Jones, James Slater, William Dunlap, John Stone, Gwendolyn Magee,
and Birney Imes III. MIAL is
a privately funded self-sustaining non-profit established in 1978.
Among its founders were Governor William Winter, Dr. Cora Norman,
Dr. Aubrey Lucas, Dr. Noel Polk, and Mrs. Keith Dockery McLean.
Plans are underway for a day of arts events preceding
the June 10 gala. A tour of Rowan Oak and an exhibit of quilts
made by Gwen Magee, a former MIAL award winner and current member
of the MIAL Board of Governors, are two of the highlights planned.
Dr. Ann Abadie, Oxford, heads the program committee; other members
are Bonnie Davidson, Tupelo; Sandra Shellnut, Pass Christian;
Patty Lewis, Oxford; Jan Taylor and Mark Wiggs, Jackson.
