Advertising for Open or Vacant Positions

The following procedure must be followed when posting a vacant position in your department in order to comply with university policy and Mississippi Department of Labor standards.

  1. Prepare a position description for the open or vacant position
  2. Forward a copy of the position description to the Director of Human Resources for posting
  3. Forward a copy pf the position description to the Office of University Relations for posting on the Weekly Bulletin
  4. List the open or vacant position with the Mississippi Employment Security Commission, i.e. “Job Service”, in addition to any other advertisement medium used.
  5. Notify the Office of University Relations when the position is filled in order to take the opening off the Weekly Bulletin.

ASU Office of Academic Affairs has an immediate opening for the position of Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. ASU seeks an exceptionally qualified, bright, energetic, innovative individual with substantial experience in areas typically found in academic affairs. The Associate Vice-President will work with and reports to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and will play a key role in creating an institutional climate and culture that puts students and their achievements first and foremost when determining the facilities to be used, the people to be hired, the programs to be developed, and the services to be provided.  The successful candidate will articulate the university’s vision of academic excellence and will assist in the development and implementation of strategic, administrative and supervisory initiatives necessary to fulfill the academic agenda and vision of the University.  Primary responsibilities include faculty development in support of learning and teaching excellence, coordinating diversity efforts within Academic Affairs, and working with both Academic and Student Affairs professionals in the areas of enrollment management and student success.
Qualifications: 
The qualifications required of candidates are:  an earned doctorate; a commitment to the university mission and philosophy; a knowledge of state and national issues pertaining to higher education;  a proven record of successful experience in one or more of the following areas: transfer programs, occupational/technical programs, continuing and distance education, workforce development, and academic support services; (3) years of progressively increasing responsibilities (post-master's) in academic affairs administration; Experience in a broad array of student affairs functional areas; professional/career development that demonstrates appropriate preparedness for the position of Associate Vice-President.

The ASU School of Business has an immediate opening for the position of  Dean, School of Business. The School of Business offers graduate and undergraduate programs at its Natchez campus and undergraduate programs at its main campus at Lorman. The school currently employs eighteen full-time faculty and four full-time staff. The School is a member of AACSB and the university's strategic plan includes obtaining AACSB accreditation. Employment begins July 1, 2006.
The Dean of the School reports directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in business field from an AACSB accredited university. The ASU College of Excellence has an immediate opening for the position of an Academic Adviser. Qualifications: Masters degree in Counseling, Education, or related field and minimum of three years of appropriate experience required. Ideal candidate will be experienced in counseling and teaching post-secondary students to build and maintain academic success skills. The ideal candidate will also have direct experience in advising students from their initial enrollment through successful completion of the graduate and professional school admissions process. Candidates should be able to demonstrate proficiency in the use of PC word processing and spreadsheet software. Excellent oral and written communications skills required.
Responsibilities:  
Advise and counsel students and monitor their overall academic progress. Assess the strengths and interests of students and help them select a course of study that best fits them, particularly undecided students. Guide students in the selection of out-of-class activities that will complement their program of study and enhance their preparation for graduate study. Advise students appropriately in the selection of courses in the general education core curriculum and initial courses in their major field of study. Transfer student records to the appropriate School within the University upon the student’s completion of the core curriculum. Assist in the planning and execution of programs such as convocation, orientation, and various workshops held in the College for Excellence.

The Mississippi Small Farm Development Center has an immediate opening for a Marketing Agent on a part-time, temporary basis.  Application deadline is February 8, 2006Qualifications: a bachelor degree is required in agriculture, agricultural economics, agribusiness, business, marketing, or a related area.  A candidate with substantial relevant, real world experience will have a greater advantage. He/she must possess very good interpersonal skills which would include the ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with people. Responsibilities: the marketing agent will help small farmers, small-scale agricultural enterprises and farmer cooperatives identify local and regional markets and further assist with effectively accessing said markets – i.e., selling to consumers, middlemen and institutional food service establishments. The marketing agent will establish rapport with the agricultural/agribusiness sector locally and regionally.  He/she will conduct and/or participate in meetings and workshops with farmers and their cooperatives on post-harvest handling, distribution, and negotiating terms of trade. He/she will work closely with other relevant agricultural units. The marketing agent will be supervised by the Marketing Specialist employed by the Mississippi Small Farm Development Center.

The ASU School of Graduate Studies has an immediate opening for the position of a Secretary. Secretary reports to the Dean. The primary function of the Secretary is to perform general office activities related to the maintenance of the School of Graduate Studies. He/she assists the Dean and Administrative Assistant to the Dean in ensuring the effective operation of all Graduate Programs.
Qualifications: the applicant should possess a minimum of a bachelor degree in business administration, office management or a master’s degree in Counseling, and have at least three years of work experience. The applicant must possess good typing skills (type 50 words per minute efficiently) and a good command of oral and written English. Additional skills include computer literacy especially of Microsoft Office Suite 2003 (Word, Word Perfect 11, Excel and Power Point). The secretary must be able to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position with minimum supervision.

The ASU Southwest Mississippi Rural Minority Business Development Center has immediate openings for the following positions:

Director: Southwest Mississippi Rural Minority Business Development Center. Responsibilities: the incumbent will provide leadership for the development of The Southwest Mississippi Rural Minority Business Development Center at Alcorn State University.  The Center Director will assist entrepreneurs in accessing capital and provide training and other technical assistance in identifying business opportunities, expansions and markets.  He/she will provide leadership in business development, research and training initiatives primarily focused on the development/expansion of micro, small and medium size ventures.
Qualifications:  Preference will be given to individuals with a doctorate in business, economics, community/rural development or related fields.  Applicants with a master’s or bachelor’s degree in one of the fields cited and have demonstrated accomplishments in rural/community and economic development will be considered.  The successful candidate must possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written skills.

Entrepreneurship Development Specialist. Responsibilities: This position reports directly to the Center Director and will be responsible for identifying and recruiting entrepreneurs to participate in the program.  The incumbent will develop and conduct entrepreneurship training activities and will assist in identifying and acquiring resources to develop and sustain the Center.  The Entrepreneurship Development Specialist will assist in identifying and creating niche markets for potential goods and services produced by micro, small and medium – sized enterprises in the region.
Qualifications: The successful applicant should possess at least a master’s degree in business, agribusiness, economics, rural/community development, entrepreneurship, or a related field.  A bachelor’s degree and successful experience in entrepreneurship development will be considered for the position.

Research Associate. Responsibilities: The incumbent will report directly to the Center Director and will assist in conducting business development research on best fit business enterprises for Southwest Mississippi.  The Research Associate will perform literature reviews and gather empirical data to support the Centers training curriculum, marketing and other entrepreneurial initiatives.
Qualifications:  Applicants should possess at least a bachelor’s degree in business, economics, agribusiness or a related field.  Preference will be given to applicants with a master’s degree in the above cited fields and those with three years of successful work experience in entrepreneurship development.

He/she will be expected to work with the private and public sectors in identifying markets, developing markets, and promoting Mississippi products. He/she will conduct staff development training for extension agents and provide technical assistance to farmers in post-harvest handling, distribution, and negotiating terms of trade. He/she will work closely with all relevant agricultural units. The specialist will work under the supervision of the Director of the Mississippi Small Farm Development Center. ASU Department of Mathematical Sciences has an immediate opening for the position of Head of Math Tutoring Center. The successful candidate will work closely with the faculty of the Math Department to run a newly-established Math Center, be committed to tutoring students for mathematics, supervising student assistants, promoting usage of the center, and coordinating different sections of some classes. ASU Center for Information Technology Services seeks a highly motivated, results-oriented Web Developer/Programmer/Trainer to assist in maintaining the Alcorn website, developing interactive web applications and training users in the effective use of select hardware and software packages relevant to meeting accreditation standards. This position reports to the Director of Information Technology Services (CITS). Qualifications:   Bachelor's degree in Computer or Information Sciences with relevant experience or official web development certification; experience with Microsoft FrontPage, Macromedia suite, Adobe suite; proficiency in using CSS, HTML, XTML, ASP and/or PHP, Windows XP, Windows Server OS, Visual Basic, Java and Javascripting; familiarity with database applications and peripheral devices a plus; excellent oral and written communication skills a must, excellent interpersonal skills desired.

ASU Center for Information Technology Services seeks a highly motivated, results-oriented Computer Support Specialist to provide technical support primarily to students. This position reports to the director of CITS. Responsibilities include: install, troubleshoot and repair computers, network switches and peripheral equipment for students with minimal down or turn-around time; install software and resolve software problems related to network connectivity; interact with and recommend vendors and products based on price/service; maintain computer labs and public area computer equipment; and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:   Thorough knowledge of Windows 98/2000/XP, knowledge of networking fundamentals, A+ certification a plus, 1 - 3 years experience maintaining/troubleshooting laptops, desktops, printers and other peripherals, must be able to lift up to 50lbs., must possess excellent customer service skills, ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks efficiently and devise creative and timely solutions to problems.

ASU  School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied Sciences has an immediate opening for the position of  Coordinator of Workforce Education Leadership & Mid-South Partnership Articulating Programs.  The successful candidate will work closely with the Office of the Dean, School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied  Sciences (AREAS) and the Vice President for Academic Affairs to provide academic leadership, management, and overall coordination for the ASU/MSU joint Master’s Degree Program in Workforce Education Leadership (WEL).  

Qualifications:   Doctorate Degree in Education, Technology Education, Workforce Development, or related fields with at least three years experience in program administration on the graduate level.  The successful candidate should also have previous experience with advisement and enrollment management on the graduate level.  Applicants must have excellent written and oral communication skills, good computer literacy skills, and demonstrate an ability to work with university, continuing education professionals, and community college officials.

Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Computer Science. The ASU Department of Biological Sciences has an immediate opening for a Tenure-track Assistant Professor (or above) of Biology with expertise in one of the following areas: Environmental Biology, Molecular Toxicology, Botany, Field Biology, Ecology, Evolution, Cell Biology, Biotechnology, Genetics, General Biology. The ASU Mississippi River Research Center has an immediate opening in Watershed Biogeochemistry. The incumbent will conceive, plan, and implement biogeochemistry research programs emphasizing: (1) the role of biogeochemical process in connected ecosystems of landscapes and receiving waters of the southern Independent streams in Mississippi; (2) factors controlling biogeochemical processes in watersheds in southwest Mississippi, especially the Homochitto watershed; and (3) comparative related studies such as nitrogen and phosphorus cycling and transport in watersheds and understanding riparian, fluvial, hyporheic or in-stream processes. The incumbent must have demonstrated abilities to analyze, synthesize, and publish the results of research on biogeochemistry. Interacts with, and provides assistance to, colleagues, and peers in related aspects of the Center’s watershed hydrology/management research. Presents research results at scientific meetings, workshops, and seminars. Trains students, interns, postdoctoral fellows, and/or visiting investigators in the Center’s research program in biogeochemistry. Participates in the Centers’ public education programs.
The applicant must have an earned Ph.D. in soil and water chemistry or biogeochemistry from a regionally accredited university.

Software Engineer Research Associate. Applicant must have Ph.D. or M.S. in Computer Science/Software Engineering or closely related discipline. Experience in specifying, architecting, designing, verifying, implementing, and testing software components and systems languages, environments and areas such as: C, C++, and Java; Python, and Perl; Windows and Java environments. Experience with J2EE development, Net web application development, project management, database design and administration on engines such as DB2, Oracle, or MS SQL Server. Excellent oral and written communication skills; substantive track record indicating extensive practical experience. Track record of scholarly research in the area is a plus. 

Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Expert. Applicant must have Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or closely related discipline relevant to image-processing, pattern recognition, and Geo-spatial information systems. Applicant should have a track record of scholarly research n the area, excellent oral and communication skills; substantive publications in national and internationally scholarly journals and conference; track record indication an ability to secure funding for research and conduct laboratory and curriculum development.  

Statistician. Applicant must have Ph.D. in Statistics, Bio-statistics or closely related area. Applicant should have a track record of scholarly research in the area, excellent oral and written communication skills; substantive publications in national and international scholarly journals and conference; track record indicating an ability to secure funding for research and conduct laboratory and curriculum development.


ASU Cooperative Extension has an immediate opening for a qualified Chief Programmer.  Must have a Master's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Engineering, or related field plus 3 years of experience in the position offered or 3 years experience developing applications.
In lieu of a Master's degree as described and 3 years of experience as described, employer will accept a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Engineering, or related field plus 5 years of experience in the position offered or 5 years experience developing applications.  40 hrs/wk.
