Alcornite to Present at National Conference

Mitchell Shears, elementary instructional specialist for Jackson Public Schools, has been selected to make a presentation at the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) 61st Annual Conference and Exhibit Show, April 2, 2006.

This year’s conference theme is Constructing the Future, Challenging the Past, Excellence in Learning, Teaching, and Leadership.  The conference will be held at the McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois.

ASCD is and has been a strong voice in the debate about educational issues that affect learning and teaching. As a nonpartisan education association, ASCD continues to advocate for policies and practices that ensure each child has access to educational excellence and equity.

Shears’ presentation was selected as a ticketed session and he has received confirmation that his session is full to capacity.  Shears’ session will also be audio and video recorded to be purchased by conference participants and those who are unable to attend.  The session will be available on original CD and MP3 CD for $15.95.

Shears’ presentation title is Educating the African American Male.  Across the nation, scores of African-American males can be observed wandering the halls of public schools, alienated from the educational process, searching for the making of their American dream.  Their absence is often conspicuous in upper level academic and gifted classes, while their presence is readily apparent in remedial classes (Bailey & Paisley, 2003).   This session will focus on the current research experiences of African-American males within society and within the educational system.  Educators will receive and discuss material on ways to address these issues.

Shears has worked in JPS for five years as a teacher and administrator.  He received his bachelor’s degree in mass communications and master’s degree in elementary education, both from Alcorn State University.  He also received his specialist’s degree in educational leadership and administration from Mississippi College.

The above mentioned workshop will be highlighted at the 2007 Alcorn State University Mid-Winter Conference in Jackson, MS.
