Student Support Services Sponsors the
Spring 2006 Ice Cream Social and Cultural Awareness Event
On Tuesday, March 28, 2006,
Student Support Services (SSS) sponsored the Spring 2006 Ice Cream
Social and Cultural Awareness Event in the EE Simmons Old
Gymnasium. The purpose of this event was to give students an
opportunity to meet the newly hired SSS staff, to learn of the many
benefits of being a SSS participant, and to allow students to
network with other SSS participants, faculty, and staff.
Approximately sixty Student Support
Services participants attended the event, along with a grand showing
of faculty and staff members.
One of the highlights of the event
was a showcase of talent in the form of various songs and cultural
displays. A mission of the SSS program is to provide its
participants with cultural enrichment activities. This mission was
definitely accomplished at this event when members of the ASU
International Multicultural Student Association performed songs,
chants, and lullabies in their native languages to entertain
attendees! Various cultures and nationalities were represented,
including African, Vietnamese, Russian, Hawaiian, and African
American. Tables and posters displaying various artifacts,
souvenirs, and photographs from India, Kenya, and Russia were also a
hit.
After the singing, several students
gave their testimonies of how participating in the SSS program has
assisted in making their matriculation through college easier and
much more unique and enriching.
“I urge you to get involved in the
program, if you haven’t already,” said Korri Jones. “Student Support
Services gave me confidence and provided me with the opportunities I
needed to excel and to find what it was that I really wanted to do
in life beyond graduation.”
Besides the SSS participants, the
guest of honor for the event was the ice cream! The event culminated
with a relaxing social affair highlighted by free ice cream for all
and the sounds of some smooth tunes provided by Rodney Dickens, also
know as, DJ Rod D, also a SSS participant.
