Alcorn State University SIFE Team Places First Runner-Up at Regional Competition in Memphis, TN

The Alcorn State University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team received the first runner-up distinction at the SIFE Regional Competition in Memphis, TN on Thursday, April 6th, 2006, closing out a triumphant year of project creation, management, and implementation for the ASU SIFE Team.

Dr. Ella Anderson, a SIFE Sam Walton Fellow and professor of business at Alcorn State University says “We are able, willing, ready, and motivated to change the world one project at a time. Competition was a brief demonstration of how we have changed the community we serve in the past year. We are elated that we have first runner-up for our efforts, and our SIFE Team looks forward to continuing our legacy of excellence and empowerment during the 2006-2007 academic year.”

SIFE is an international non-profit organization active on over 1,000 university campuses in more than 40 countries. SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that team market economics, entrepreneurship, personal finance, success skills, and business ethics. Projects are judged at competition on creativity, innovation, and effectiveness. The ASU SIFE Team received first runner-up accolades out of a pool of fifteen teams from across the region.

During the academic year, the Alcorn State University SIFE team organized fourteen projects in the Fayette/Port Gibson/Lorman/Natchez community, including “Helping a Healing Heat,” collaboration with the Alcorn State University Extension Program and Christian Organized Relief Effort (CORE).

Joshlean Fair, co-president of Students in Free Enterprise, states that “2005-2006 was a year of transition for ASU SIFE that marked on era of renewed spirit for service and connection to the surrounding community. This year’s competition was a learning experience, and an eye-opener to the fundamental principles of free enterprise. It was a milestone for a fresh team and a stepping stone for planning next year’s projects.”

The ASU SIFE Team has already begun strategic planning for the upcoming academic year with a program supported by a platform of community service and financial empowerment in an area of Mississippi inundated with socio-economic ills. The 2006-2007 academic year will see a number of new and returning projects to the ASU SIFE program.
