LA
Hosts Morehouse and Alcorn State
at Silver Dollar
Classic, Sept. 29-30
An
action-packed weekend of excitement, on and off the football field,
will be featured when Morehouse College and Alcorn State
University, two of the nation’s most prestigious Historically
Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), square off during Silver
Dollar Classic Weekend II, being held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29th
and 30th, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Sports
Arena. The Coliseum was the site of the historic Olympic Games
of 1932. More than 100,000 people are expected to attend the event.
The weekend
will be filled with heart-pounding drama as the schools, school
alums, students and fans battle for bragging rites to declare their
school the best in two areas where competition between HBCUs are
traditionally the fiercest – on the football field and in the
classic Battle of the Bands.
Additionally,
the Silver Dollar Classic Weekend will include a Greek Step Show,
Career and College Expo, and Festival featuring more than 100
vendors.
“Anyone who
has attended an HBCU knows firsthand about the fun and excitement of
a college football classic. For those who have not had the
African-American college experience, the Silver Dollar Classic is a
must-attend event. It’s an extraordinary weekend of family fun,”
said John Fleming, CEO, Silver Dollar Classic, LLC, event organizer.
“You’ll never
see a more passionate display of school allegiance and cultural
pride,” Fleming said.
The
captivating, two-day Silver Dollar Classic event will kick-off with
the Battle of the Bands competition at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29,
at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. The traditional band event held
routinely at HBCU football games was, until recently, a
highly-anticipated half-time treat. Now, the Battle of the Bands,
with its colorful pageantry, stunning visual symmetry and musical
mastery, has evolved into an event all its own.
Marching band
fans and music lovers in general will enjoy the melodic spectacle of
the Battle of the Bands competition featuring the 200-member Sounds
of Dyn-o-mite Alcorn State Marching Band under the direction of
Samuel Griffin and the 110-member Morehouse College Maroon Tigers
House of Funk Marching Band under the direction of Melvin M. Jones.
Then, on
Saturday, Sept. 30, the Los Angeles Coliseum football field will be
on fire when the awesome Alcorn State Braves battle the mighty
Morehouse Maroon Tigers. Kick-off time is 2:15 p.m.
The Braves,
led by head coach Dr. Johnny Thomas, play a punishing running game
that led the SWAC in rushing in 2005. They vow to tackle anything
and anyone that crosses their path. The Tigers, led by head coach
Terry J. Beaufords, boast a “take no prisoners” type of game
featuring five returning All-SIAC ballers. The Tigers threaten to
maul any team that gets in their way.
Plus, there
will be pre- and post-game activities aplenty including a Black
Greek Step Dance Competition featuring a showcase of fraternities
and sororities in the artful foot stompin’, hand clappin’, spoken
word performance mix that is an African American college staple.
“The Silver
Dollar Classic is a celebration of our cultural heritage as it
relates to our institutions of higher education. I encourage
everyone to come out, enjoy and explore the rich traditions we’ve
established on the college campus,” said Fleming.

leading black universities in the nation. Alcorn State alums
include football great Steve McNair.
Founded in
1867, Morehouse College is the nation’s largest, private liberal
arts college for African-American men. The school enrolls
approximately 3,000 students and confers bachelor’s degrees on more
African-American men than any other institution in the world.
Morehouse alums include Spike Lee, Samuel L. Jackson and the Rev.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
