Around the Horn Panelist and Los Angeles Times Writer
J.A. Adande’ Featured Speaker at November McCormick Tribune

sports columnist and panelist for ESPN’s highly acclaimed
“around the horn” telecast Joshua Ade Adande’ visited Alcorn
State University Department of Mass Communications as a featured
speaker within McCormick Tribune Speaker’s Series on November 16th,
2007 at 12:00 pm.
Adande, who has been a full-time staff writer for the Chicago
Sun Times and Washington Post, has covered such
illustrious events such as the Olympic Games, Wimbledon, the
Super Bowl, the NCAA Final Four, and World Cup 2006. He received
his Bachelor of Science degree from the Medill School of
Journalism at Northwestern University and has held positions at
The Washington Post, the Miami Herald, and The
San Bernadino Sun. His work has also appeared in the annual
“Best American Sports Writing” Series. Mr. Adande is also an
esteemed member of the National Association of Black Journalists
(NABJ).
Mr. Adande motivated Alcorn State University
students by describing his life hardships, giving helpful
information about internships, and lectured about the importance
of minorities in the field of communications.
“You want to enrich yourself. You have to bring
everything you have, experiences and knowledge that you have
gained… you have to be compelling, to do something different
that sets you apart,” Mr. Adande expresses.
“I thought that Mr. Adade’s speech was very
interesting and motivating. He gave me a lot of helpful insights
about the real world and what life is like,” said Shana Green,
who is a mass communications major and Miss Communications as
well.
“If you believe in yourself, that’s all you
need. Someone believes in you for you to get this far. All you
need is one. If people read my column, it means something to me.
It means that I have accomplished something,” Mr. Adande
said.
“I really enjoyed Mr. Adande’s speech. It was
very encouraging. He gave me some very good advice about what to
expect in the future,” says Nicole Gellispie, who is a
computer/science major.
Other speakers of the presentation included Tory
A. Hargro, Chairman of the McCormick Tribune of Distinguished
Journalist series, Jared Cook, anchor of the ASU-TV 13, Dr.
Sherlynn H. Byrd, Chairperson of the communications department,
and Dr. Reginald Lindsey, the Dean of the school of Arts and
Sciences.
The Alcorn State University Mass Communication Department
McCormick Tribune Speakers Series is a collaborative effort
between Alcorn State University Mass Communications Department
and the McCormick Tribune Foundation, a charitable grantmaking
organization that supports work in journalism, communities,
citizenship, and education. The series ran through November of
2006.
