Advertising for Open or Vacant Positions

The following procedure must be followed when posting a vacant position in your department in order to comply with university policy and Mississippi Department of Labor standards.

  1. Prepare a position description for the open or vacant position
  2. Forward a copy of the position description to the Director of Human Resources for posting
  3. Forward a copy of the position description to the Office of University Relations for posting on the Weekly Bulletin
  4. List the open or vacant position with the Mississippi Employment Security Commission, i.e. “Job Service”, in addition to any other advertisement medium used.
  5. Notify the Office of University Relations when the position is filled in order to take the opening off the Weekly Bulletin.

ASU Alumni Affairs has an immediate opening for the position of Director of Alumni Affairs.  The  incumbent works under the supervision of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Planning, and Research and is responsible for coordinating the development, administration and/or maintenance of a comprehensive alumni relations program which is geared toward providing services to alumni and providing opportunities for alumni to serve the university.  The incumbent serves as the primary liaison between the National Alumni Association and the university administration. Responsibilities: the Director of Alumni Affairs is accountable for working closely with the National Alumni Association as well as with local alumni chapters and individual alumni in identifying and defining their interests, needs, and aspirations and in providing technical assistance and guidance.  The incumbent also assists in communicating the interests, needs, aspirations, policies, and achievements of the university to alumni.  Central to the responsibility of the Director of Alumni Affairs is that of cultivating and maintaining good communications, understanding and relationships between alumni and their alma mater. The Director of Alumni Affairs works closely with other university officials in supporting the functions of admissions and recruiting, placement services, planning and development, public information services and related functions. ASU Extension Program has an immediate opening for a Program Assistant at the Small Farm Incubator Center in Preston, MS.  The Program Assistant will assist in all production practices, care and maintenance and will monitor equipment, buildings and the overall appearance of the farm.  The Program Assistant will work under the day-to-day supervision of the Farm Manager.  The Off-Campus Center Coordinator will provide overall guidance and direction to the Farm Manager and Program Assistant.  Responsibilities:  Assist with on-farm demonstration emphasizing soil preparation and quality and production, harvesting and marketing of alternative crops; assist with implementation of production practices required for fruit and vegetable crops outlined in the farm plan; assist in performing all farm-related activities in connection with the operation of the farm such as:  field preparation, crop  production practices, harvesting of all crops, preparation and movement of all crops to market, mowing grass and keeping field free of weeds, and carrying out other duties as assigned.  Qualifications:  Minimum of five years of farm related experience in horticulture related field.  Minimum of five years of work experience working effectively with farmers and producers in communities.  Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and other partners involved in Center activities.  Must possess a valid drivers’ license and is required to participate in educational demonstrations, programs, events and activities of the Center and Alcorn State University Extension Program.  Application closing date:  December 31, 2006.  Application procedure:  Interested person(s) should send three (3) letters of recommendation, an Alcorn State University application, a resume, and transcript(s) to:

ASU School of Nursing has an immediate opening for the position of Mental Health Counselor (Part-Time). Qualifications: A Mississippi State Mental Health License as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LCP). Ten years of experience in the field of assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental illnesses as well as developmental and behavioral disorders. Accountability: The counselor is accountable to the Dean of the Alcron State University School of Nursing, Natchez Campus. The counselor will adhere to the professional ethical standards governed by his/her license. ASU Department of Advanced Technologies has several Postdoctoral Research Associate positions open in the System Research Institute which focus on different areas.  The Systems Research Institute (SRI) serves to support the strategic vision of the university as it relates research defined by the President through creation and application of cutting edge technology and expertise in digital image processing, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, geospatial technologies, robotics and automation, software engineer, energy research, sensors and sensor networks. The institute is committed to delivering high technology products which may be commercialized through the agency of a high technology incubator situated in southwest Mississippi. 

The initial appointment is 2 years with possible extension based on the available funds and his/her performance. Current on-going research is funded by DOD, DOL and NASA.  Several tracks for post-doctorates are sought. The following qualifications are required:  

Biomedical imaging areas (6 positions): Strong background in Biomedical Engineering; Three years (or above) of biomedical imaging experience in one of the following imaging modalities, MRI, Ultrasound, Mammograms; Experience in medical image processing; Good programming ability in Matlab and C/C++; Experience in cancer diagnosis.  

Sensor Design Area (1 position): MEMS Design and Control; Finite element modeling and analysis (FEMA), Modeling and Simulation; Good programming ability in Matlab, Labview;  

Sensor Networking (2 positions): Sensor networks; Protocols; Wireless sensor networking;  

Software Engineer/Web Services (1 position): 1)          M.S. Degree in Computer Science or a B.S. Degree in Computer Science with at least three years of working experience in software development; Hands on working experience on Web Design and Programming is required; Proficient in Java and/or C++ Programming, JSP and/or ASP.Net, HTML; Able to work on J2EE and/or .Net Framework; Knowledge of Matlab and image processing algorithms is a plus. 

Software Engineer/Database Design and Development (1 position): M.S. Degree in Computer Science or B.S. degree in Computer Science with at least three years of working experience in software development; Hands on working experience on Oracle and/or SQL Server is required; Proficient in Java and/or C++ Programming, SQL Programming, Relational Database Design and Development; Database administration working experience is desirable. 

Software Engineer/Server Side Programming (2 positions): M.S. Degree in Computer Science or a B.S. Degree in Computer Science with at least three years of working experience in software development; Proficient in Java and C++ Programming; Familiar with J2EE and/or .NET Framework; Knowledge in Web services and relational database design and development is desirable; Able to use Matlab and interpret image processing algorithms from Matlab into Java and/or C++ code.

Candidates must have Excellent English communication skills including both oral and writing skills, good performance as a team leader and a team player, Industrial experience, grant proposal writing skills a plus.
