SAEOPP
Regional Academic Competition
On February 24, 2007, the staff in Student Support Services (SSS)
along with thirteen SSS participants traveled to Hinds
Community College in Utica, MS, to participate in the annual
TRiO Day activities. TRiO Day is a special day that is set
aside to recognize the services provided by all federal TRiO
programs, the staff providing the services, and the students
served by the programs.
Students and staff were treated to motivational speakers,
networking opportunities, and many other exciting and
enriching events. One of the events was the MAEOPP Academic
Competition. Of the many schools representing at TRiO Day,
Alcorn State University SSS participants were chosen as
winners of the 2007 MAEOPP Debate Challenge and were invited
to represent the state of Mississippi at the SAEOPP Regional
Academic Competition to be held in Atlanta, GA on April 19-20,
2007.
Coached by Katrina Campbell, Assistant Director of SSS, and
Ayana McCoy, Guided Transition Counselor, members of the
debate team were as follows:
Michael Brockington, Sophomore, Computer Science major
Sharla James, Junior, Business Administration major
Korri Jones, Senior, Math Education major
Inneka Minor, Sophomore, Business Administration major
Though the ASU SSS Debate Team did not come home with gold
medals in tow, they did come home with something just as
valuable! The experience of participating in the SAEOPP
Academic Competition proved to be priceless. Students learned
to hone their debating skills, also they networked with other
TRiO professionals and interacted with peers from other
educational institutions located throughout the Southeastern
region.
Additionally, the trip to Atlanta, GA, was a worthwhile
experience within itself! SSS participants were also treated
to a full schedule of unique and enriching experiences. In an
effort to explore future graduate school options, students
were taken on tours of both Georgia Institute of Technology
and Georgia State University. Then, they spent time
appreciating history as they toured the Martin Luther King,
Jr. National Site. This tour included MLK, Jr. birth home,
Ebenezer Baptist Church, MLK, Jr. Museum, and the resting
sites of both MLK, Jr. and Coretta Scott King. The trip ended
with a visit to the Georgia Aquarium, the world’s largest
aquarium. The students received a chance to see fascinating
aquatic animals and plants that are native to Georgia and the
world’s oceanic and coastal areas.
