Hosted by Alcorn State University 

You are invited to attend a 2-day workshop to educate you on providing additional income for your forested land.   

Date of workshop is:   June 1-2, 2007

Congratulations Graduating  Seniors….

Collegiate Risk Management (CRM) will again be on campus conducting exit interviews in conjunction with our Financial Literacy Sessions. The 20 minute sessions will satisfy your exit interview obligation as well as provide valuable financial and student loan information. Sessions held May 7th,8th,9th from 9-6pm in  the Campus Union,  room 7-8. Refreshments will be available.

We have taken your concerns into consideration and open up an open enrollment period for you before the summer break. Open Enrollment for the Cafeteria Plan will be held on April 24 – 25, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the Campus Union, room 7 & 8. The Plan Rep. will be available to answer questions in reference to the cafeteria, colonial and vision plans.   

NOTE:        All Faculty as well as Staff whether enrolled or not will need to renew your cafeteria plan application with the plan rep.  

Please make every effort to visit with Mr. Cupit or one of his Reps. on the available dates. 

(This period is not exclusive to Faculty; Staff is encourage to attend) 

ADDITIONAL NOTE: 

There will be another open enrollment period held on May 18, 2007. More information is forthcoming.


Alcorn to Host Technology Assimilation in Science Classroom Workshop on July 2-30, 2007

Alcorn State University will host a four-week workshop for middle school and high school science teachers from the surrounding school districts from July 2-30, 2007. The workshop entitled “Technology Assimilation in Science Classroom (TASC)”, is funded by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning through “No Child Left Behind: Improving Teacher Quality Grant Professional Development Program”. Eighteen teachers from eight school districts will participate in the program. Participants will receive a stipend, daily lunch, Science software and supplies. The main objectives of this program are:

1.      To provide a four-week summer workshop, exposing the participants to computer applications in science.

2.      To involve teachers in “hands-on” laboratory activities in molecular biology.

3.      To prepare teachers with methods to reach the varied interests and abilities of today’s students (Team building, critical thinking and computer presentations).

4.      To host two follow-up sessions, one per semester in the following academic year.

5.      To help participants develop an awareness for science project and implement at their school.

INTERNATIONAL STUDY TOUR 

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY/PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNIVERSITY/ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY

GHANA - A STUDY TOUR 

WHEN:            APRIL-MAY 2007 

COURSE:          ASU students will gain credit by registering in GP 401 (Study Abroad/Undergraduate Global Research Experiences) or GP 501 (Graduate Global Research Experiences).  The course is open to all majors.     

COST:             $2,900.00 – $3,200.00 (exact cost dependent on the number of participants includes: Air fare, hotel accommodation, ground transportation, cultural tours, lectures, fees & some meals)

                     Scholarship opportunities for students are available through the Office of Global Programs at ASU.  

WHAT:     The Ghana Study tour is a 5-week program for which there is Alcorn State University undergraduate or graduate credit. The first two weeks of the program will be offered during the spring semester of 2007 at Alcorn State University. Two weeks of the program will take place in May 2007 in Ghana.  The last week of lectures, seminars and final assignments will be conducted on-line after return to the U.S. The program is implemented in collaboration with the University of Kentucky and Prairie View A&M University.

AgDiscovery Summer Camp Application Time!

AgDiscovery Camp at Alcorn State University is now accepting applications. This three-week, on-campus summer camp is focused on promoting careers in the fields of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine through hands-on experiences and filed trips. This year, the camp will be June 3-June 22, 2007.

Summer Research Opportunity Program for 2007 

The Summer Research Opportunity (SROP) at the University of California, Berkley, was established to promote access to graduate education among undergraduates who have been educationally or economically disadvantaged and who may not have exposure to the academic environment of a research university. 

The program offer internships in the humanities and in the biological, physical, and social sciences for sophomores, juniors, and seniors (not graduating in the spring semester/quarter, except UC Berkeley students). SROP is an eight-week program that will commence on Sunday, June 3, 2007, and continue through Saturday, July 28, 2007. 

The goal of this program is to increase the level of diversity among students entering Ph.D. programs by providing research opportunities under supervision of a faculty mentor. Program objectives are: to provide students with preparation to become research scholars; to stimulate serious consideration of graduate study; and to increase the number of successful underserved applicants and to enroll these students in graduate school. 

The Summer Research opportunity Program affords students an opportunity to conduct research under the direction and guidance of a UC Berkley faculty member and/or graduate student mentor. In most disciplines, scholars may propose a research topic, but the mentor determines the research project. 

Special consideration will be given to applicants who have shown potential for success, but may have had limited access to graduate research or other academic opportunities. The program strongly encourages applications from undergraduates who have been educationally or economically disadvantages and who show potential to benefit from exposure to the environment of a research university. All applicants will be considered without regard to race or gender. 

ELIGIBILITY 

The summer research internships will be offered on a competitive basis to those individuals who, at the application deadline: 

a)      Are citizens or permanent residents of the United States; 

b)      are enrolled full time at a four-year college or university; 

c)      are sophomores (who have completed at least three semesters of four quarters of actual college course work), juniors, and seniors who will not be graduating in the spring  (However, graduating UC Berkeley seniors are eligible); 

d)      have not already completed a B.A. or B.S. degree; 

e)      have a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average; 

f)        have shown potential for success, but many have had limited access to graduate research or other preparatory opportunities; the applicant should indicate his/her potential for success particularly as it relates to educational achievement while overcoming obstacles, which may include, but are not limited to economic, social, or educational challenges.
