Advertising for Open or Vacant Positions

The following procedure must be followed when posting a vacant position in your department in order to comply with university policy and Mississippi Department of Labor standards.

  1. Prepare a position description for the open or vacant position
  2. Forward a copy of the position description to the Director of Human Resources for posting
  3. Forward a copy of the position description to the Office of University Relations for posting on the Weekly Bulletin
  4. List the open or vacant position with the Mississippi Employment Security Commission, i.e. “Job Service”, in addition to any other advertisement medium used.
  5. Notify the Office of University Relations when the position is filled in order to take the opening off the Weekly Bulletin.

ASU Office of Student Affairs/Residence Hall has an immediate opening for the position of Assistant Housing Director. This is a 12-month non-tenure track appointment, located in Rowan Hall under the supervision of the Housing Director. Responsibilities: Work under the Director of Housing for day-to-day operation of student housing, maintenance and cleaning. Review, revise and develop housing policies and operating procedures to ensure safety of residents. Help assist with crisis response teams. ASU has an immediate opening for the position of Executive Housekeeper. The position is supervised by President/President’s Spouse of Alcorn State University. Position effective July 1, 2007. The Executive Housekeeper position involves routine manual labor plus additional duties associated with providing housekeeping and hosting duties for the President and family in the University house, run errands and pick up supplies for university events/entertaining and assist with other duties as assigned. This employee will work under the immediate direction of the President and President’s spouse. There will also be nominal supervision by the University Dining Services associated with University events held at the house. This is a part-time temporary confidential assignment, 18-30 hours per week, no benefits. Hours will vary. Responsibilities: Dust, mop, sweep, and wet mop floors, baseboards, furniture, etc.; vacuum rugs and carpets; clean hardwood floors; clean all bathrooms; change bedding; water plants, inside and outside the house where applicable; sweep walks and patio; change light bulbs; wash dishes, pots, pans, etc.; wash windows (interior) and French door glass; Polish silver service when applicable; sweep out garage; do laundry and ironing; answer household phones and take messages; help with family member needs as requested; coordinate with Dining for special events in conjunction with president’s spouse; coordinate table setting: napkins, table cloths, flowers, etc.; order candles; order beverages: soft drinks, coffee, tea, etc.; order table cloths and napkins from Dining; coordinate table and chair set up as needed; order paper towels, toilet paper, light bulbs and trash bags; make sure fire wood is available for the fireplaces during the winter months; other duties as assigned. ASU Swine Development Center has an immediate opening for the position of Co- Principal Investigator & Outreach Program Coordinator. This is a 12-month non-tenure track appointment located with The Swine Development Center, Alcorn State University, Alcorn State, MS. The position is responsible for the development and delivery of research, educational and technology transfer programs related to sustainable (pasture) pork production technologies for limited-resource producers. Responsibilities: Conduct producer/consumer surveys related to the production, processing and marketing of pork and pork products from hogs reared under an alternative production (pasture based swine management) system; write competitive grants for additional funding; frequent travel to several southwest Mississippi counties is required; assist researchers at the Center to conduct applied/adaptive research to resolve significant issues and to test systems of selected pork production technologies and practices; create research based fact sheets, bulletins, newsletters, and other educational materials in furtherance of the overall educational extension program for the pasture pork program; utilize educational media such as radio, television, websites, newspapers, electronic delivery, telephone and teleconferences for program delivery; plan, coordinate, assist and host field days, tours, meetings and other Center-based education and extension activities. ASU Department of Mass Communication has an immediate opening for the position of Visiting Assistant/Associate Professor.  The Department of Mass Communication is seeking an assistant professor for the 2007-2008 academic years. The full-time (nine month) position begins August 2007. The position requires teaching core courses such as mass media writing, copyediting, introduction to mass communication, and other courses related to the mass communication curriculum.  This person will also advise students within the department and serve on departmental and university committees. Qualifications: a Ph.D. degree in mass communication or related field is required; however, a strong candidate who is ABD and will complete their studies within one year of the hire date will be considered. ASU Extension Program has a temporary opening  for the position of the Program Assistant for the Extension/Research Farm in Mound Bayou, MS. The Program Assistant will be a member of the Off-Campus staff of Alcorn State University Extension Program and will work under the day-to-day supervision of the Farm Manager for the Center. Responsibilities: assist with on-farm demonstration emphasizing soil preparation and quality; assist with production, harvesting and marketing of alternative crops; assist with implementation of production practices required for fruit and vegetables crops outlined in farm plan ; perform all farm-related activities in connection with the operation of the farm. ASU Department of Advanced Technologies has several Postdoctoral Research Associate positions open in the System Research Institute which focus on different areas.  The Systems Research Institute (SRI) serves to support the strategic vision of the university as it relates research defined by the President through creation and application of cutting edge technology and expertise in digital image processing, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, geospatial technologies, robotics and automation, software engineer, energy research, sensors and sensor networks. The initial appointment is 2 years with possible extension based on the available funds and his/her performance. Current on-going research is funded by DOD, DOL and NASA.  Several tracks for post-doctorates are sought. The following qualifications are required:  

Biomedical Imaging Areas (6 positions): Strong background in Biomedical Engineering; Three years (or above) of biomedical imaging experience in one of the following imaging modalities, MRI, Ultrasound, Mammograms; Experience in medical image processing; Good programming ability in Matlab and C/C++; Experience in cancer diagnosis.  

Sensor Design Area (1 position): MEMS Design and Control; Finite element modeling and analysis (FEMA), Modeling and Simulation; Good programming ability in Matlab, Labview;

Responsibilities: Primary teaching assignment will be Basic and Advanced Television Techniques, Basic and Advanced Television Production and its lab components. Successful candidate must have experience and knowledge of multi-camera television studio setting; the ability to teach Avid and Avid DS editing. Additional courses in broadcast announcing, media writing, and new technologies and programming. Responsibilities will also include student advising, and overseeing the ASU-TV newscast, engage in university and community service. Our new faculty member will be committed to inspire students to the best professional practices, keep them interested and truly care about their education and future. Qualifications: Ph.D. Preferred. ABD considered at Instructor level. Excellent teaching skills are required. Previous college teaching experience is desirable.

ASU Center for Information Technology Services seeks a highly motivated, results-oriented Web Developer/Programmer/Trainer to assist in maintaining the Alcorn website, developing interactive web applications and training users in the effective use of select hardware and software packages relevant to meeting accreditation standards. This position reports to the Director of Information Technology Services (CITS). Qualifications:   Bachelor's degree in Computer or Information Sciences with relevant experience or official web development certification; experience with Microsoft FrontPage, Macromedia suite, Adobe suite; proficiency in using CSS, HTML, XTML, ASP and/or PHP, Windows XP, Windows Server OS, Visual Basic, Java and Javascripting; familiarity with database applications and peripheral devices a plus; excellent oral and written communication skills a must, excellent interpersonal skills desired.
Responsibilities include: communicating with departments/units to develop or update the university website; be familiar with current industry standards and trends, and provide technical input to the ASU Web Development Team, ensure web pages conform to standards established by this team, train campus users in the use of peripheral devices and productivity software suites related to electronic maintenance and submission of data for accreditation requirements; develop and maintain a specific site according to institution and SACS accreditation standards; other duties as assigned.

ASU  School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied Sciences has an immediate opening for the position of  Coordinator of Workforce Education Leadership & Mid-South Partnership Articulating Programs.  The successful candidate will work closely with the Office of the Dean, School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied  Sciences (AREAS) and the Vice President for Academic Affairs to provide academic leadership, management, and overall coordination for the ASU/MSU joint Master’s Degree Program in Workforce Education Leadership (WEL).  

Qualifications:   Doctorate Degree in Education, Technology Education, Workforce Development, or related fields with at least three years experience in program administration on the graduate level.  The successful candidate should also have previous experience with advisement and enrollment management on the graduate level.  Applicants must have excellent written and oral communication skills, good computer literacy skills, and demonstrate an ability to work with university, continuing education professionals, and community college officials.
