Regional Health Disparity Summit I Scheduled
for October 16 at Alcorn State University

The event will discuss, among other issues, reasons behind the higher death rates for Blacks in Mississippi. From 2000-2005, Blacks died at a rate two times higher than Whites from hypertension and heart failure.

Speakers for the event include Jesse McGee, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center; B. Waine Kong, JD, PhD, CEO of the Association of Black Cardiologists; Sheila Davis, PhD, RN, Professor of Nursing at the University of Mississippi Medical Center; Leonard Jack, Jr., PhD, MSc, the Jim Finks Endowed Chair of Health Promotion/Professor of Behavioral and Community Health Sciences at the Louisiana State University Health Science Center School of Public Health; and Theresa “Tessie” Smith, MSP, MEd, Director of the Division of Policy and Planning at the Mississippi Department of Mental Health.

The event is free and open to the public. For information on registration, accommodations or directions, contact the Office of Health Disparity Elimination at 601-576-7266.
