Alcorn Professor of Biology Publishes in the
Journal of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences
Dr.
Alex D.W. Acholonu, Professor of Biology, Alcorn State
University, published an article Water Quality Studies on
Freshwater Bodies in New Orleans, Louisiana One Year After
Hurricane Katrina in the latest issue of the Journal of
the Mississippi Academy of Sciences (October 2007). This
article was published with his student Tiffari Jenkins and

Alcorn State University School of Education and Psychology
Dean and Associate Dean Serve as Presenters for AAER
Dr. Josephine Posey, Dean School of Education
and Psychology and Dr. Doris Gary, Associate Dean, were
selected to serve as presenters for the Association for the
Advancement of Educational Research (AAER) held November 6-9,
2007, in Hutchinson Island, Florida. They have been invited
to present at this conference annually since Alcorn’s
outstanding 2001 NCATE visit. Each year their presentations
have focused on a different aspect of the NCATE Accreditation
process that resulted in Alcorn State University passing all
standards. The November presentations shifted to the 2006
successful NCATE visit. Their presentations each year were
very highly received by the attendees with much dialogue
especially from the institutional representatives with
scheduled upcoming NCATE evaluations.
The paper presented in November was entitled
“The Role of Collaboration on Student Achievement in Effective
Teacher Preparation Programs.” They captured the research of
noted educators and the operational process of Alcorn State
University’s Professional Education Unit in ensuring quality
programs. They shared information on the role of
collaboration in the unit’s day to day operation and its
contribution to Alcorn’s Professional Education Programs being
Nationally Recognized.
Posey shared with the audience Gary’s role as
NCATE Coordinator in ensuring success. As a result, Gary
received requests from institutional representatives with
upcoming visits seeking her service as an NCATE consultant.
Because of Alcorn’s excellent NCATE evaluations, institutional
representatives from universities within the state of
Mississippi and other states have visited Alcorn’s
Professional Education Unit to talk about the NCATE process
and to see the NCATE Documents Room. Alcorn continues to
receive inquiries to date seeking advice on passing all NCATE
standards and seeking input on the implementation of Alcorn’s
Teacher Education Assessment System as stated in the 2006
Board of Examiners Report. The report states “An exemplary of
the system’s attributes is its ability to monitor and track
candidate progress and unit operations”. Institutions
inquiring want the assurance of having a successful visit of
quality.
Because of their scholarly involvements and
annual presentations at AAER, Drs. Posey and Gary were
selected to serve as Board Members for the AAER organization.
They have been members of the board for the past three years.
Alcorn State University is very proud of its Professional
Education Unit (Administrators, Faculty, Staff and Students).
Representatives are welcome from any institution, in or out of
state, to visit the campus at any time to see first hand what
is being done in the School of Education and Psychology as we
strive for excellence on a continuous basis to ensure
Continued Accreditation.

Alcorn Faculty Member
Serves as Adams County Board of Supervisors President
On
January 14, 2008, the County News published an article
about Daryyl V. Grennell, Alcorn State University faculty
member who serves as the president of Adams County Board of
Supervisors.
It reads: “These days it is
not unusual to find government officials starting second or
third careers after they leave office, but a county supervisor
in Natchez, Miss. has two successful full-time careers going
at the same time.
Adams County Board of
Supervisors President Darryl V. Grennell is an award-winning
educator who easily meshes his concern for children with his
concern for his community. The common goal of his
dual-careers: helping the young people of his community get
ahead.
A faculty member in the
department of biological sciences at Alcorn State University,
Grennell was a driving force behind Alcorn’s Saturday Math and
Science Academy, which began in 1996. The academy provides
classroom experiences in chemistry, biology, physics, math and
computer science to 5th through 8th graders from Adams, as
well as neighboring Jefferson and Claiborne counties.”
“I have students in my
(college) classes who were in that first science academy,” he
said. “One student who comes to mind is Eddie Davenport, a
junior at Alcorn State. He has a high GPA and is doing well in
terms of his matriculation at Alcorn.”
The Mississippi State
Legislature honored Grennell, a NACo Justice and Public Safety
Steering Committee member, with an award for Outstanding
Faculty in 2006. He is also the recipient of the Alcorn State
Outstanding Faculty Award.
Grennell, who teaches
microbiology, medical microbiology and genetics, at Alcorn
State, found his way into county office courtesy of a conflict
of interest of sorts.
He was considering a run
for the State Legislature in 1997 when he was approached by
Philip West, now mayor of Natchez, who was in his last term as
county supervisor and was also thinking about a state senate
run.
“The problem was that I
couldn’t teach at a state-supported institution and be a state
legislator,” Grennell said. “So we agreed that he would run
for the state position, and I would run for his county seat.”
Both men won their
elections, and Grennell has served as Adams County’s board
president almost consecutively since 2002.
“I really like
participating in the governmental process because government
always changes,” he said. “It trickles down and changes from
the federal level to the state level. We in county government
have to adapt and deal with those particular changes. I’m
helping people in my community and implementing the various
programs that the federal and state governments provide for
us.”

Williams, senior, Biology/Physical Therapy major, of Natchez,
MS, has earned the distinction of being named to The National
Dean’s List, an honor bestowed only on the top one percent of
college students.
Tammy Williams is a
non-traditional student. She went to college when she was
already a grown woman and had her own family. She is
married to Earnest Williams and has a daughter E’Keria
Williams.
“My little girl made me go
back to school. I wanted her to have a foundation and be able
to see that her both her parents went to college and not have
an excuse not to go to college,” shared Williams. Upon
graduating she wants to teach at Alcorn State University.
Based on her exemplary
leadership and outstanding academic performance, Williams has
been nominated to attend the International Scholar Laureate
Program (ISLP) Delegation on Medicine next summer 2008.
This rare opportunity will
have a tremendous impact upon Williams’ future. Her
participation in the International Scholar Laureate Program
Delegation on Medicine in South Africa will place her in elite
company as she pursues her professional career goals.
As a member of the Medicine
Delegation, she will join a select group of exceptional
college students from across the United States for an
enriching pre-professional experience – one which will change
her life and enhance her academic profile.
She will be exposed to an
extraordinarily full range of medical treatments – from the
most advanced surgical and diagnostic procedures, as conducted
in hospitals that rank among the best, to ceremonial and
botanical healing as it has been practiced for thousands of
years. Williams will broaden her perspective in a way not
likely without this unique program and gain a tremendous head
start toward fulfilling her career goals.
Williams will return from
this once-in-a-lifetime adventure with new perspectives and
greater confidence to pursue a successful career in her chosen
field.
