Advertising for Open or Vacant Positions

The following procedure must be followed when posting a vacant position in your department in order to comply with university policy and Mississippi Department of Labor standards.

  1. Prepare a position description for the open or vacant position
  2. Forward a copy of the position description to the Director of Human Resources for posting
  3. Forward a copy of the position description to the Office of University Relations for posting on the Weekly Bulletin
  4. List the open or vacant position with the Mississippi Employment Security Commission, i.e. “Job Service”, in addition to any other advertisement medium used.
  5. Notify the Office of University Relations when the position is filled in order to take the opening off the Weekly Bulletin.

ASU Department of Agriculture has an immediate opening for the position of Research Associate. Qualifications: must have at least a Masters' degree in economics, agricultural economics, agribusiness or related areas; with training/experience in commonly used computer software (especially SPSS), data collection, analysis, and compilation of information; ability to conduct socioeconomic research, work with people, communicate effectively, cooperate as a team member and respond appropriately to policies, administration and supervision; must have an understanding of or experience in rural community affairs and must be able to effectively interact with community participants and leaders; someone who endeavors to be an advocate for rural people and community development. The staff member will be required to assist with developing questionnaires, perform field surveys periodically and attend professional meetings. He/she will have responsibility to help synthesize and analyze both primary and secondary data. ASU has an immediate opening for part-time position of Director, Alcorn Writing Project (AWP.)  The AWP offers an array of programs to K-12 teachers in twelve southwestern counties of Mississippi to help them elicit more, and better, writing from their students.  The Director of the AWP holds a half-time position and reports to the Chair of the Department of English at Alcorn State University. Minimum requirements include a master=s degree with at least 18 graduate hours in English, at least five years of experience teaching writing at the university or K-12 level, and a working familiarity with current approaches to writing pedagogy as well as with the objectives and philosophies of the National Writing Project (NWP). Experience in a local site of the NWP and completion of a local site=s Summer Institute are highly desirable. Experience writing and administering grants is helpful. The Director is directly responsible for all activities of the AWP. The Director submits annual applications for the grants that fund the Project and is responsible for all assessments and reports required by funding agencies. The Director also budgets grant funds, submits and approves requisitions for AWP programs, supervises two Co-Directors and submits related personnel documents, and generates contracts for and supervises AWP consultants. The Director is also responsible for planning and implementing all AWP programs, giving particular emphasis to the Project=s annual Invitational Summer Institute (SI), and serves as lead teacher in the SI. The Director also plans and attends monthly continuity meetings for AWP teacher-consultants and attends all meetings of the statewide network of sites and the annual conference of the NWP. Postdoctoral Research Associate: Nutrient Management & Conservation Planning.  Candidate should have a Ph. D in soil fertility/nutrient management or a closely related field with training and/or experience in soil and plant analysis, measurement of soil carbon and nitrogen pool and fluxes in relation to land use and residue management by using a range of field and laboratory techniques. Current areas of research include organic horticulture, horticultural residue management, conservation tillage for vegetable production, soil and tissue diagnostics, temporal and spatial changes in nutrient availability from crop residues, organic manures, inorganic fertilizers and nutrient uptake, and plant response to nutrient management. Strong written and oral communication skills in explaining soil and water conservation, and nutrient management issues on horticultural fields and demonstrated ability with computer software are essential. ASU Office of Student Affairs has an immediate opening for the position of Director of Health Care Services. This is a 12-month non-tenure appointment, located in the Felix Dunn Infirmary under the supervision of the Vice President for Student Affairs. Responsibilities: Oversee overall operation of the University Health Center.  Liaison with key members of the University community, consultants and other outside individuals, such as insurers regarding services and needs.  Supervise all aspects of operations.  Serve as administrator for the health center. Provide family-centered nursing services on a preventive, curative, and rehabilitative level in a collaborative/consultative relationship with a licensed physician and under Mississippi Board of Nursing approved protocols or guidelines. The Family Nurse Practitioner must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide primary care, based on physical, psycho/socio, educational, safety, and related criteria for the infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric clients. This position will hold a joint nursing faculty/clinical appointment.  As a faculty member, he/she works under the general supervision of the School of Nursing to maintain prescribed clinical and classroom teaching assignments and office hours. ASU Office of Business Affairs has an immediate opening for the position of Budget Director. The position reports to the Director of Business Services. Responsible for the development, monitoring, and adjustments to the University Operating Budget which includes the State of Mississippi Budget Request (MBR) and related policies and procedures. Qualifications: A Bachelors degree in Accounting or Business Administration is required and an MBA degree is preferred.  A record of significant Accounting, Finance or Budget career achievement is desired.  Effective interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are required.  Exhibit experience in collection and evaluation of data to develop valid conclusions and recommendations. ASU Department of Agriculture has an immediate, 12-month, full-time position (100%) of Research Assistant. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating, teacher with the faculty member, all activities related to reproductive physiology research conducted in the field and laboratory.  Activities include field data collection, analysis (both laboratory and statistical analyses) and technical reporting of ruminant nutrition research data.  Additional responsibilities are serving and assisting in management of animal and pasture resources. ASU has an immediate opening for the position of Swine Breeding & Artificial Insemination (AI) Technician at the Alcorn State University Swine Development Center, Church Hill, MS. The facility includes eight individual boar stalls with flush gutter waste control. A separate room for semen collection is directly connected with a state- of -the art semen evaluation and processing laboratory. Responsibilities: Boar semen collections, processing and evaluation. Detecting heat patterns in weaned sows and replacement gilts; Natural or artificial mating of the heat detected animals. Recording of data on the events occurring in the breeding, farrowing and gestation areas; Carrying out 21-day heat checking and ultrasonic pregnancy checking; Feeding and watering all sows and boars; Assisting in animal movement and understanding barn flow patterns; Keeping the AI unit, breeding and gestation areas as clean as possible; Working with the rest of the breeding and gestation team to finish all jobs; Assisting sows during the farrowing process; Processing of litters from sows that have already farrowed; Cross-fostering pigs to minimize preweaning mortality. ASU Department of Mass Communication has an immediate opening for the position of Development/Promotions Director at WPRL-FM. Responsibilities: The Development /Promotions Director is responsible for promoting a favorable image of the station at all times, which includes coordinating and scheduling on and off air promotions as well as producing flyers and program guides. Additionally, the Development/Promotions Director will assist members of the staff in procuring complimentary event tickets, gift certificates, and/or theater passes for station giveaways.  The Development/Promotions Director is also responsible for coordinating activities within the department of mass communication and writing grant proposals. ASU Department of Advanced Technologies, School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied Sciences has an immediate opening for the position of post-doctoral Research Associate for 3-D image processing.  The Systems Research Institute (SRI) serves to support the strategic vision of the university as it relates to research defined by the President through creation and application of cutting edge technology and expertise in digital image processing, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, geospatial technologies, robotics and automation, software engineer, energy research, sensors and sensor networks. The institute is committed to delivering high technology products which may be commercialized through the agency of a high technology incubator situated in southwest Mississippi.  The initial appointment is 12 months with a possible extension based on available funds and his/her performance. ASU Printing and Duplication has an immediate opening for the position of Printing Production Supervisor. This is a 12-month non-tenure track position under the supervision of the Director of Printing and Duplication. Responsibilities: to coordinate the production activities associated with the press and bindery units of an in-plant printing operation; including setup, and maintenance of equipment; coordinate the daily work flow of jobs needed to be printed each work day; train and instruct students on various equipment; monitor quality and production standards, and make recommendations for improvement in various production activities;  evaluate production time and makes decisions as to the best production methods to meet job due dates and quality expectations; participate in equipment evaluations to determine equipment replacement and upgrades;  ensure plant safety procedures are understood and adopted, and exercises safety precautions regarding machine and equipment operations;  work with management and staff to help resolve issues affecting production; ensure supplies and materials are available for jobs in progress; estimate time and material usage for various jobs.  Responsible for security and confidentiality of materials submitted for printing and bindery. ASU Extension Program has an immediate opening for a Director of Media and Communication.  The Director will provide leadership in developing and implementing strategic marketing and communication plans for the ASU Extension Program that encompass media relations, public information efforts, print and electronic promotional materials, and special events and projects.  Additionally, the Director will develop and maintain effective communication and relationships between the ASUEP and stakeholders. Responsibilities:  The Director must demonstrate the ability to maintain an effective working relationship with the Extension Administrator and associates.  In addition, the Media and Communication Director will:  provide comprehensive leadership, expertise, perspective and service to support the programs of ASUEP in collaboration with research and instruction; work under the direct supervision of the Extension Administrator advising the Administrator on University and state-wide communication and technology issues, establish new initiative and opportunities to modify and/or improve products and services; develop and implement strategic marketing and communication plans for ASUEP, encompassing media relations, public information efforts, print and electronic promotional materials, student recruitment, and special events and projects; manage and supervise a communications team of audiovisual technicians, curriculum designers, editors, graphic artists, photographers, videographers, web designers and support staff; develop and implement a comprehensive plan to increase the units’ staffing effectiveness and efficiency in its delivery of services and products; coordinate a communications team development of educational and technical publications, training and recruitment materials and the unit’s editorial and audiovisual support to ensure they are creative, attractive and effective; develop media relations material including print, radio, television and www conduits such as press releases, newsletters, etc.; develop publicity efforts and public awareness campaigns; build a cooperative working relationship with research scientists, extension specialists, teaching faculty, staff and other University administrators with varied backgrounds, experiences and disciplines; coordinate distance education information technology support; develop a plan to further integrate new technologies into extension, instruction and research; seek funding to support communication and technology demands and other products and services provided by the communication unit; and develop relationships with university public relations and other relevant print and broadcast media. Qualifications:  must have an earned Masters Degree, a Doctorate Degree preferred in Communications, Journalism, Education Administration or related field from an accredited University; must have some administrative experience and five years of total experience in communications, public relations or information technology.  Other majors will be considered if the applicant demonstrates above average public relation or media relation skills.  Appropriate equivalent combination of training and expertise will be considered. The successful candidate must have the following qualifications and attributes:  an extensive comprehensive background in print, electronic and telecommunications; proven leadership and management skills, preferably experience managing a multifaceted communications unit; demonstrated expertise in the development of educational, marketing and communication tools; a high level of creativity and motivation; the ability to manage a variety of tasks under pressure; the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, to meet deadlines, and work with budget constraints; a broad-based understanding for directing comprehensive administrative and academic computing on infrastructure for campus and county extension centers; and superior writing and verbal communication skills. Responsibilities:  The Dean of Nursing leads the faculty in curriculum planning, development, implementation and evaluation.  The Dean mentors and collaborates with faculty and staff to further their professional development, represents the School of Nursing to all stakeholders and publics, and provides leadership in the areas of academic and administrative policies and procedures, strategic planning and assurance of overall program effectiveness.  Other duties include: 1) development, implementation, and evaluation of program philosophy and objectives, 2) leading in achieving program effectiveness, 3) leading in establishing curriculum, academic and administrative policies and procedures, 4) maintaining adequate numbers of professionally credentialed faculty, 5) evaluating faculty performance and effectiveness, encouraging faculty and staff development 6) maintaining program accreditation, 7) facilitating student recruitment and development, and 8) managing the resources of the School.  This is a 12-month administrative position with a tenure-track faculty appointment within the published policies for rank, promotion and tenure at the University. ASU Department of Advanced Technologies has several Postdoctoral Research Associate positions open in the System Research Institute which focus on different areas.  The Systems Research Institute (SRI) serves to support the strategic vision of the university as it relates research defined by the President through creation and application of cutting edge technology and expertise in digital image processing, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, geospatial technologies, robotics and automation, software engineer, energy research, sensors and sensor networks. The institute is committed to delivering high technology products which may be commercialized through the agency of a high technology incubator situated in southwest Mississippi. 

The initial appointment is 2 years with possible extension based on the available funds and his/her performance. Current on-going research is funded by DOD, DOL and NASA.  Several tracks for post-doctorates are sought. The following qualifications are required:  

Biomedical Imaging Areas (6 positions): Strong background in Biomedical Engineering; Three years (or above) of biomedical imaging experience in one of the following imaging modalities, MRI, Ultrasound, Mammograms; Experience in medical image processing; Good programming ability in Matlab and C/C++; Experience in cancer diagnosis.

ASU Department of Education and Psychology at Alcorn State University has 1 (one) open full-time tenure-track positions in psychology.  Rank and salary for each position are negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Responsibilities: The successful candidates will participate in all aspects of undergraduate education in psychology including, but not limited to, teaching, advising, research, serving on university committees, public service, and grant writing. Qualifications: The successful candidates should hold a Ph.D. in psychology and be willing to teach in a wide range of undergraduate courses including but not necessarily limited to the following: general psychology, history of psychology, computer applications in psychology, motivation, learning, cognition, industrial/organizational, and personality. Opportunities also exist for the successful candidates to develop courses in his/her special areas of interest. The normal course load is 12 hours per semester. The successful candidates should be committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching, advising, and research. ASU Mass Communication Department has an immediate opening for a Teaching Position of an Assistant Professor. Responsibilities: Primary teaching assignment will be Basic and Advanced Television Techniques, Basic and Advanced Television Production and its lab components. Successful candidate must have experience and knowledge of multi-camera television studio setting; the ability to teach Avid and Avid DS editing. Additional courses in broadcast announcing, media writing, and new technologies and programming. Responsibilities will also include student advising, and overseeing the ASU-TV newscast, engage in university and community service. Our new faculty member will be committed to inspire students to the best professional practices, keep them interested and truly care about their education and future. Qualifications: Ph.D. Preferred. ABD considered at Instructor level. Excellent teaching skills are required. Previous college teaching experience is desirable.

ASU  School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied Sciences has an immediate opening for the position of  Coordinator of Workforce Education Leadership & Mid-South Partnership Articulating Programs.  The successful candidate will work closely with the Office of the Dean, School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied  Sciences (AREAS) and the Vice President for Academic Affairs to provide academic leadership, management, and overall coordination for the ASU/MSU joint Master’s Degree Program in Workforce Education Leadership (WEL).  

Qualifications:   Doctorate Degree in Education, Technology Education, Workforce Development, or related fields with at least three years experience in program administration on the graduate level.  The successful candidate should also have previous experience with advisement and enrollment management on the graduate level.  Applicants must have excellent written and oral communication skills, good computer literacy skills, and demonstrate an ability to work with university, continuing education professionals, and community college officials.
