Small farms have been the foundation of our nation, rooted in the ideals of Thomas Jefferson and recognized as such in Core Agriculture policies. During FY' 03-2007, we will renew our
dedication to the potential value of small farmers in the renewal of rural communities in the 21st Century. During the next decade, small farmers will be stronger and will thrive using farming systems that emphasize management skills and ingenuity of the individual farmer.

With USDA's endorsement of the CRAT report and the report of the National Commission on small farms, the Cooperative Extension Program at Alcorn State University envision programs
being implemented that will provide a competitive advantage for small farms. The success of these programs will depend on the establishment of a framework of supportive, yet responsible government and private initiatives, the application of research innovated educational activities and the stimulation of new markets opportunities. As small farmers succeed, not only will they continue their valuable contribution to the nation's food supply, but they will also fuel local  economies and energize rural communities across the state and nation.

During the next four years, the resources of Alcorn State University Cooperative Extension Program will be devoted to the development and dissemination of research based information for small family farmers. The thrust of the Cooperative Extension Program over the next four years will be directed to improving farm income through increase production of alternative agricultural enterprises, reduced cost, and improved profitability of traditional agricultural enterprises by adopting improved management practices, diversification, and value-added processing. Significant emphasis will be placed on sustainable agriculture as a profitable ecological and socially sound strategy for small family farmers. Through our sustainable agricultural education programs, agents and specialists will emphasize farming practices, technologies, and management systems that protect water quality, create habitat for wildlife, and improve soil quality and reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources. To implement these programs, additional resources will be required to upgrade current staff as well as employ new personnel with the required expertise. The next four years are expected to result in significant changes and advancements for Mississippi small family farmers.
