In 1991, eight public universities in Mississippi formed an alliance with the National Science Foundation known as the Mississippi Alliance For Minority Participation (MAMP). These institutions of higher learning joined together to address the staggering under representation of minorities in the fields of science and engineering.
The objective of MAMP is to encourage more minority students to attend institutions of higher learning in pursuit of careers in the areas of mathematics and science. "Bridging" serves as a "boot camp" for entering freshman in mathematics, science, engineering, and education.
This program gives students a chance to spend five fun-filled weeks on the campus of Alcorn State University participating in enrichment courses and laboratory experiences in mathematics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and life skills. Other activities include educational trips and peer mentoring. Experiences acquired by attending this program are very rewarding for a student's educational and career future.
Students that choose to attend the MAMP program will receive continued support. This support includes guidance counseling, assistance in class work, and incentive awards based upon achievement in class.
Other MAMP objectives include:
- Student Empowerment
- Undergraduate Research Experiences
- Bridge to Graduate School
- MAMP-Drop-In Centers
- Recruitment
- Curriculum Reform (The Gate-Keeping Courses)
- Mentoring/Networking
