Veterans Assistance

Services for veterans are provided through the Office of the Registrar.  Assistance is given to veterans and dependents of eligible veterans to enable them to derive the maximum benefit from their veteran’s educational entitlements.

The VA Contact helps students apply for benefits, provides information, and serves as a liaison between the veteran and the VA Regional Processing Office.

Each semester/term that the veteran wishes to receive VA benefits, she/he must meet with the VA Contact to assure that all necessary information is on file and that the criteria have been met from the previous semester/term.

You must complete and return the Veterans Information Form in order to receive benefits.

    Department of Veterans Affairs: http://www.gibill.va.gov/

This site provides valuable information to veterans on benefits; all applications are also available from this site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to receive advanced payment(s) from the VA?

No.  Alcorn State University does not accept advance payments from the VA.

Can I have my checks sent directly to the University to pay my fees?

No.  All payments will be either mailed to you or deposited directly into your personnel account.

How will I be paid?

Checks are mailed/deposited at the end of the month for the preceding month.

When should I expect my first check?

Normal processing time takes 6 to 8 weeks.

Can I repeat a class?

You may only repeat classes if:

·        You did not make a passing grade;

·        You made a D in the class but your major requires C or higher.  In this case, you must provide written verification on letterhead from your college to the Office of Veterans Affairs stating that a C or higher is required for major requirements to be completed.

Do all my classes have to apply toward my degree?

Yes.  To receive VA Educational benefits, you must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program and all of the classes you take must apply toward that degree.

Do Grade Point Average requirements (g.p.a.) vary?

In almost all cases the student must maintain a g.p.a. of 2.00 or better, in order that benefits will continue.

***Note:  All registration processes for the veteran are overseen by the VA Contact here at the University, including but not limited to: schedule input, schedule modifications (drop/add), and major changes.***
