The Bachelor of Science in Biology The Department of Biological Sciences offers courses in basic biological sciences for all students as well as specialized subjects for its majors. The purpose of the department's course offerings, especially for the teaching majors, is to provide sufficient background in zoology and botany as well as general biology and other specialized biological courses. Courses are chosen in order to give the prospective biology teacher a broad background as well as to give the teacher depth and breadth in the biological sciences. The department offers methods courses in conjunction with the Department of Education. The methods courses are intended to familiarize the student with various pedagogical theories and their application to learning, and materials that are used in the teaching of biology. After completing a total of 44 hours, the teaching majors must apply for admission to teacher education before they can take restricted professional education courses. They must maintain a minimum G.P.A. of 2.50 and a minimum of "C" or above in EN 111, 112, PH 132, and SA 223. To be admitted to The School of Education, the student must take and pass the PRAXIS I examination. The PRAXIS II examination must be taken and bassed before taking ED-468. Upon successfully completing the biology curriculum, passing a departmental comprehensive examination, and meeting the standards required by the state, the student will receive a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Alcorn State University and will qualify for a class "A" teaching certificate.
