Department of Social Sciences

The Department of Social Sciences offers courses in the Social Sciences for all students as well as specialized subjects for its majors. The purpose of the department's course offerings, especially for teaching majors is to provide sufficient background in specialized courses within the history curriculum and in the Social Sciences. Also in conjunction with the Department of Education, instructional courses in the art of teaching are intended to familiarize all History Teacher Education majors with various pedagogical theories and their application to learning and materials that are used in the teaching of history.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

After successfully completing a minimum of 44 semester hours, all History Teacher Education majors must apply for admission to the University's Teacher Education program. Admission to this program requires the earned grade of "C" or better in EN 111, EN 112, SA 223, and PH 132, and have an overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.50. In addition, students must also successfully complete all social science courses with a grade of "C" or better, meet the requirements of the Department of Social Sciences, and pass the Social Sciences Exit Examination, Praxis I, and Praxis II examinations. History Teacher Education majors are are expected to pass all of the following courses in the History Teacher Education curriculum with a "C" or better. The specific curriculum which leads to the completion of a Bachelor of Arts in History with a teaching endorsement in secondary education is as follows:
