INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY
Specialization: Computer Networking
Department of Advanced Technologies

The computer networking specialization is designed for students interested in computer networking and internet applications. The student is prepared for the position of a systems administrator in the typical diverse computing environment. Demand for computer networking professionals far exceeds the supply. Students will gain expertise in databases such as Oracle and DB2, network operating systems such as Windows NT, Novell Intranetware, IBM OS/400, UNIX, and Internet related applications. These information technology professionals continue to demand high salaries averaging above $45,000/year as new hires. Employment growth projections show increasing demand in every geographical region of the country. The rapid rate of innovation in computer networks and telecommunications poses unique requirements on computer networking professionals including: theoretical depth in computing issues; practical expertise in handling computing challenges; and astute decision-making to handle the rapid rate of technology change, all of which affect significant financial investment of companies and agencies. Information and efficient communications affect this leveraging of an enterprise to remain competitive.

The computer networking specialization is intended to produce skilled professionals with depth in theoretical and practical applications in the networking area to permit design and maintenance of networks. Certification with external bodies such as Microsoft, Novell, IBM, and the FCC is required as part of exit exams to ensure a high level of competence and placement of graduates. The computer networking specialization will accept students for the fall of 1998. The Department of Industrial Technology combined the options in computer applications and electronics applications into this new specialization. Current Industrial Technology majors may take the courses required with the consent of their advisor and department chairman. Courses must be taken in the sequence listed below.
