Child Development class offers a “Taste of Culture” to Alcorn family
Lorman, Miss. (December 13, 2013) – An Alcorn State University child development class, under the instruction of Dr. Martha Ravola, associate professor in the Department of Human Sciences, School of Agriculture, Research, Extension and Applied Sciences, recently provided an opportunity for Alcorn students, faculty and staff to get a “Taste of Culture” on the Lorman campus.
During the two-hour program, students showcased the cultures of seven countries. The room full of vibrant displays and rich native attires, was buzzing with different languages and filled with aromas of national cuisines.
A team from the Department of Fine Arts under the direction of Kimberly Washington, coordinator of band operations and a master’s program student, performed a dance that incorporated music and movements drawn from various countries. International and multicultural students Tony Innouvong, Caroline Mensah and Sumeera Kamil, shared about their respective cultures.
Also in attendancewere high school students from Natchez High School accompanied on this field trip by their teacher Mrs. Trish Pomeroy.
“We would like to thank Shalonda Brinkley, a senior child development major, for leading this effort, Dr. Carrie Ford, chair, and the students in the Department of Human for their support. Over 100 members of the Alcorn family attended this event. It was lots of fun and a huge success,” said Dr. Ravola. “The event showcased the students’ awareness of multiculturalism, provided new knowledge and encouragement to embrace different cultures and backgrounds.”
