Welcome to the School of Education and Psychology website!
Dr. Robert Z. Carr Jr., Dean
I am extremely proud to serve in the capacity of Dean of the School of Education and Psychology. Having the opportunity to come back to the state of Mississippi after spending two years in Oklahoma has been a terrific, exciting, humbling, and rewarding experience. As I have found to be true for many people here, involvement in the community is extremely important, and I look forward to fostering the relationships in the Alcorn State and surrounding southwest Mississippi community.
Alcorn State University has an extremely robust teacher education program, a significant school counselor program, an emerging psychology program, and a burgeoning health and physical education program. The school offers degrees at the bachelors, masters, and specialist levels.
Moreover, I am excited about the possibilities and opportunities available for Alcorn State University and its teacher candidates. Our School of Education and Psychology continues to grow with a vision of creating the best, talented, and effective students who will become leaders of the 21st century. The implementation of a technology initiative that allowed us to incorporate connected classrooms throughout the school in all instructional areas is simply one way we have advanced within the School of Education and Psychology in getting our faculty and students the access to smart technology. The connected classrooms provide each instructor with smart technology including Promethean boards, lecture capture equipment and software, and video conferencing capabilities. Additionally, each faculty member has an Apple Ipad 2 and laptop computer, as well as a more powerful desktop computer for their offices. It is my belief that if we are going to be serious about training high quality technologically savvy teachers, we have to provide them with state-of-the-art equipment.
We are also revising our curriculum to be more in-line with the skills that a twenty-first century pre-service teacher needs to know. When our teachers walk into a classroom, they should not only be familiar with the common core standards, but they should be able to take the lead in the discussion about how to implement the standards. Not only should our students understand the basic concepts of classroom management, but they should also be able to model the techniques and utilize instruction as an effective way to control the classroom environment.
More could be mentioned on how the School of Education and Psychology is advancing, however, I encourage you to stop by any department that you are interested in seeking a degree from whether it be the Department of Education and Psychology or the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. I am confident that you will be impressed with our faculty, facilities, and resources available.
As you make your decision where to achieve your higher education goals, I ask that you take a moment to look around, and consider making Alcorn State University a very important part of making your goals a reality.
Thank you for your interest in Alcorn State University's School of Education and Psychology. If we can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
