LaShawn Thompson, Ph.D., LPC, NCC

Dr. LaShawn Thompson is originally from the Gulf Coast of MS and received her formal education at The University of Southern Mississippi where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology while minoring in Rehabilitation Services. She also earned her Master’s Degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Counseling and her Doctorate Degree in Experimental Psychology from The University of Southern Mississippi. Her research interests include cultural groups, communalism, and social justice.


Before taking this position at Alcorn State University, she was employed as a Behavioral Intervention Specialist working with dually diagnosed individuals suffering from Intellectual disabilities and a wide range of Mental Health Disorders. Earlier in her career she had the pleasure of working as an instructor and research mentor for The Ronald E. McNairPost Baccalaureate Achievement Scholars Programat The University of Southern Mississippi. 


Dr. Thompson is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Mississippi Counseling Association. As a member of the Mississippi Counseling Association, she participates in the Human Rights Committee and hopes to have an impact on social justice issues locally and abroad.  


Dr. Thompson’s future plans are to effectively grow the psychology area of the Education and Psychology Department here at Alcorn State University. She believes it is of grave importance that our psychology program, both undergraduate and graduate, be representative of the highest standards in the field of psychology. 


Dr. Thompson and her son currently reside in Natchez, Mississippi.
