View HB 207 (2016 Regular Session) regarding new legislation that provides for an additional $4,000 to be paid to NBCTs who teach in high needs areas of the state, and about new more immediate fee reimbursement policies. The $4,000 supplement is in addition to the $6,000 that all NBCTs are paid as long as they maintain board certification and are not serving in an administrator capacity,

 What is National Board Certification (NBC)? 


Recognized as the Gold Standard, NBC provides affirmation that a teacher possesses the commitment to the profession by furthering the skills and knowledge of accomplished teaching as defined and recognized by national standards demonstrated by the teachers’ performance on a two-part assessment. There are four components that make up the certification assessment, all of which are based on high standards developed by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).  The four components, which may be taken in any order, singularly or in combination, are listed below:


  • Component 1: Content Knowledge

  • Component 2: Differentiation in Instruction

  • Component 3: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment (available in 2015)

  • Component 4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner (available in 2016)


The standards-based assessment requires candidates to create a classroom-based portfolio and to complete an online assessment of content knowledge (Component 1). The portfolio entries are to be based on the five core propositions and NBPTS standards. The core propositions are:


  • Proposition 1: Teachers are committed to students and their learning.

  • Proposition 2: Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.

  • Proposition 3: Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.

  • Proposition 4: Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.

  • Proposition 5: Teachers are members of learning communities.
