Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

This major requires 34 credit hours of core courses and 86 credit hours of courses in mathematics and computer science.

This program offers a balanced curriculum at the undergraduate level that requires students to take courses in both pure and applied mathematics .For instance, a mathematics major is required to take advanced calculus, differential equations, abstract algebra, linear algebra, mathematical modeling, mathematical statistics, and numerical analysis and number theory. All our applied mathematics courses are taught in Computer-aided laboratory classes using Mathematica and other software. Besides, the department has also adopted the Hawks Learning Systems and the Web Assign to teach some of our basic courses.

All our graduates are successfully engaged in business, industry, government, education, and other professional areas. The department and the Office of Placement Services also assist students in career planning and in seeking employment.

Why should a student major in Mathematics:

  1. Mathematics is the basis for understanding and almost every scientific and technological endeavor. 
  2. Prepare for careers such as mathematician, statistician, system analyst, and other jobs that require solid foundation in mathematics.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of a BS degree program in Mathematics at Alcorn State University, students will:

  1. Have acquired basic skills of differentiation, integration and their applications in Calculus of one variable. 
  2. Have acquired knowledge of partial derivatives, double and triple integrals, and some of their applications, and polar coordinates. 
  3. Be able to solve and model with the first and second order differential equations. 
  4. Demonstrate ability to solve application problems on traffic flow network, electrical circuits, and curve fitting using skills in basic linear algebra. 
  5. Demonstrate understanding of vector space and related concepts. 
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of combinations and their applications. 
  7. Be able to apply basic concepts of probability.  
  8. Be bale to apply logic and set theory skills in writing proofs.
  9. Have acquired skills of solving word problems involving linear Diophantine equations. 
  10. Be able to apply math skills to practical problems and solve them with the use of technology.
