Welcome to the Vicksburg Expansion Center of Alcorn State University. Dr. Ivan W. Banks serves as the Executive Director and provides the administrative oversight for this Center. Dr. Banks and his staff coordinate all efforts to substantially increase the number of students, residents, and organizations utilizing the facilities to meet the educational, professional, cultural, and continuing education goals that are aligned with the Mission of the University. More specifically, the Center’s personnel are here to:
1) Work with Hinds Community College and other entities to increase the number of associate-to-bachelor degree completion programs; 2) Establish and/or further extend collaborative agreements with Head Start and other early childcare centers to enhance the credentials of early childcare providers; 3) Collaborate with alumni chapters to better identify community needs that can be met through the services offered by faculty and staff; 4) Increase the number of credit and non-credit courses and other offerings tied to existing degree programs, certificates, and professional development for practitioners; and, 5) Facilitate activities and training for continuing education units (CEUs) and other similar activities that respond to the workforce needs of Mississippi.
To accomplish these important goals we serve as the official liaison between the University and a broad range of civic, community, religious, government, business, and industry entities. Through continuous dialog we work hard to address the identified educational needs in the Vicksburg community and Warren County, the contiguous counties, and nearby Louisiana parishes.
We are committed to establishing mutually beneficial relationships that can strengthen the intellectual capital of the many people who live and work in this region. One such initiative has gained special appeal as having strong potential to address the workforce needs of this city’s residents and even improving the skills of municipal workers. Specifically, this Vicksburg Center will be designated as a Microsoft IT Academy. With this designation, individuals will be able to gain certifications that provide entry level credentials into high demand, higher income careers; and, create pathways to advancement for persons already in those fields.
In addition, the Center’s staff is working closely with this area’s pastors, retired teachers, and many alumni to launch the Alcorn College Readiness Program in the fall of 2014. This program will provide targeted intervention and other support services for high school students to address a range of academic and other issues help students transition from high school to college and better ensure student success.
