Advertising for Open or Vacant Positions

The following procedure must be followed when posting a vacant position in your department in order to comply with university policy and Mississippi Department of Labor standards.

  1. Prepare a position description for the open or vacant position
  2. Forward a copy of the position description to the Director of Human Resources for posting
  3. Forward a copy of the position description to the Office of University Relations for posting on the Weekly Bulletin
  4. List the open or vacant position with the Mississippi Employment Security Commission, i.e. “Job Service”, in addition to any other advertisement medium used.
  5. Notify the Office of University Relations when the position is filled in order to take the opening off the Weekly Bulletin.

The Vice President of Development and Marketing will head a diverse and flexible team that must create an exuberant and sustainable advancement program to build endowment, engage alumni in the life of the institution and attract new sources of philanthropic revenue that support Alcorn State University’s strategic mission. ASU Department of Chemistry and Physics has an immediate opening for a nine-month full-time tenure-track position in Chemistry at the Assistant Professor level that will begin in August 2008. Responsibilities: teaching introductory and advanced level courses in chemistry, which may include some of the following:  Physical Chemistry, General Physics, Optics, General Chemistry, Modern Physics, Thermodynamics, Environmental Chemistry, Nuclear and Radio Chemistry, etc. for both Chemistry and non majors, and an advanced level course in a specialty area. The development of a research program involving undergraduate and master degree level graduate students is encouraged. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, serving on departmental, and university committees. A strong commitment to research and teaching/mentoring is required. The Department of Chemistry enjoys a relatively small enrollment with an annual graduation rate among the highest in the area. The Department, with 10 full-time faculty members, offers B.S. and M.S. in Education degrees. Currently, two new facilities, one for Biotechnology and another for Environmental Science are under construction and are expected to be fully functional in the Fall of 2008. Qualifications: Candidates must have a terminal degree in Chemical Physics or with expertise to carry out instructional responsibilities stated above. Postdoctoral research experience with publications in an area of Chemistry or Physics is preferred. Experience in grantsmanship is expected. ASU Department of Athletics has an immediate opening for the position of Athletics Business Manager. Responsibilities: Advises the Director of Athletics in the day-to-day disbursement of the athletic department’s operating budget; reviews and approves all budget transactions for all units of athletics; includes budget transfer, travel requests and vouchers, purchase requisitions, on-campus transactions, check requests, and others as required; prepares budget transfers, travel requests and vouchers, on-line purchase requisitions, and checks requests for majority of units in athletics; prepares and processes necessary information from game competition contracts for officials/umpires assignments and payments; prepares and processes payment of guarantees and arrangements to opposing teams; resolves general routing problems with budget transaction forms; advises the Director of Athletics in the formulations and recommendations for new-year budgets; reconciles purchases made with the University’s purchasing cards; coordinates and maintains in-house budget tracking system to ensure proper uses consistent with NCAA and University policies; generates budget account summaries as needed or requested; responds to routine inquiries regarding budget policies from athletic department staff; coordinates and manages all travel arrangements for each athletics team, including all applicable travel bookings; coordinates with all sports and any secretaries assigned to help those programs with travel arrangements; works with liaison from each coaching staff to coordinate all travel itineraries; works to insure best possible rates for travel in area common to ASU Athletics travel, including but not limited to hotel and meal rates and contracts those travel necessities on behalf of the University. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in business administration or accounting and three years of related budget experience; excellent grammatical, written and verbal communication skills in addition to good office and time management skills; knowledge of and experience with spreadsheet software; bookkeeping experience; excellent keyboarding and computer skills. The Alcorn State University Extension Program has an immediate opening for the position of Secretary (Lorman Campus). ASU School of Nursing, Natchez, MS, invites applications for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Graduate Nursing. The chairperson reports directly to the Dean of the School of Nursing and is accountable for providing leadership for strategic and operational outcomes achievement. Qualifications: must have a master’s in nursing, an earned doctorate in nursing or a related field, and teaching and administrative experience in nursing education in an institution of higher learning. The chairperson will provide faculty leadership for educational, research and service programs that focus on the delivery of health services to underserved and rural populations. The position requires a visionary person with demonstrated accomplishments in development and administration of academic programs, research and scholarly endeavors, and innovative use of technology. Program options at the graduate level include family nurse practitioner and nurse educator. Gerontology and Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program Options will be offered through a consortium-based collaborative curriculum. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field with a minimum of five years auditing experience or a combination of education and experience as required by the Mississippi Internal Audit Act (MS Code 25-65-1 through 25-65-33).)
