Advertising for Open or Vacant Positions
The following procedure must be followed when posting a vacant position in your department in order to comply with university policy and Mississippi Department of Labor standards.
- Prepare a position description for the open or vacant position
- Forward a copy of the position description to the Director of Human Resources for posting
- Forward a copy of the position description to the Office of University Relations for posting on the Weekly Bulletin
- List the open or vacant position with the Mississippi Employment Security Commission, i.e. “Job Service”, in addition to any other advertisement medium used.
- Notify the Office of University Relations when the position is filled in order to take the opening off the Weekly Bulletin.

ASU Department of Chemistry and Physics has an immediate opening for a nine-month full-time tenure-track position in Chemistry at the Assistant Professor level that will begin in August 2008. Responsibilities: teaching introductory and advanced level courses in chemistry, which may include some of the following: Physical Chemistry, General Physics, Optics, General Chemistry, Modern Physics, Thermodynamics, Environmental Chemistry, Nuclear and Radio Chemistry, etc. for both Chemistry and non majors, and an advanced level course in a specialty area. The development of a research program involving undergraduate and master degree level graduate students is encouraged. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, serving on departmental, and university committees. A strong commitment to research and teaching/mentoring is required. The Department of Chemistry enjoys a relatively small enrollment with an annual graduation rate among the highest in the area. The Department, with 10 full-time faculty members, offers B.S. and M.S. in Education degrees. Currently, two new facilities, one for Biotechnology and another for Environmental Science are under construction and are expected to be fully functional in the Fall of 2008. Alcorn State University has an immediate opening for the position of Agricultural Research Director. Research Directors and other pertinent bodies provide leadership in developing long-range strategic and sort-range plans for taking the research program to the highest level possible. Responsibilities: to recruit and retain highly qualified research scientists and staff; secure funds for research; attend meetings to enhance the University’s research endeavors; establish relationships at the state, local, and national level with key political and scientific oriented professionals; mentor young scientists; collaborate with Extension, teaching, and international programs in developing relevant research initiatives, including collaboration with other schools/departments; market research programs with stakeholders, clientele and the general public; promote interdisciplinary, multi-disciplinary programming; provide leadership in publishing refereed journals/other publications. The Agricultural Research Director administers the land-grant related agricultural research programs to assist small farmers, their families and communities in improving their lives. The Incumbent will promote research funding through interaction with federal and state officials and with private entities. He/she will oversee the day to day operations of the Agricultural Research program at the University and will manage the Alcorn Agriculture Experiment Station; will represent the University on the Association of 1890and a record of accomplishments that support appointment as Research Administrator. Qualifications: A minimum of five-year experience in research program development and implementation are required. Must possess knowledge of issues and trends in higher education, particularly related to research. Research/Administrative experience at a university will be advantageous. The incumbent must be a team builder and a team leader and hold a doctorate degree in an agricultural related discipline. Responsibilities: curriculum development, budget development and implementation, program effectiveness and evaluation; collaborate with the Director for the Center for Undergraduate Experiential Learning, the Director of Honors will assist in institutionalizing innovative teaching/learning strategies at the University. Requirements: a doctorate in an appropriate discipline, knowledge and experience in current trends in honors education at the collegiate level, and experience in teaching at the collegiate level. Alcorn State University has an immediate opening for the position of Internal Auditor. The auditor, reporting directly to the President, will perform audits to assess compliance with and the effectiveness of policies/strategic initiatives, evaluate internal controls and the accuracy of financial records, provide management with recommendations for strengthening operations and complete special projects and initiatives. Responsibilities: Conduct independent audits to assess financial, administrative and functional operations; review/analyze financial and administrative data to determine the degree of compliance with relevant accounting and operating policies/procedures as well as measuring the effectiveness of strategic initiatives and expected outcomes of the efficient use of resources, and adequacy of controls over activities; evaluate the reliability, integrity and pertinence of management and financial information; advising improvements in procedures and systems to prevent waste, abuse, overspending, and fraud; assist in providing guidance, research and training to University personnel; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, with diverse audit populations, ranging from base-line operating staff to senior administration; conduct face-to-face interviews with auditees; prepare and submit recommendations, based on audit program findings; verify, analyze and summarize various financial reports; obtain, analyze, and appraise evidential data as the basis for informed, objective opinion on the adequacy and effectiveness of the internal control system; assemble and present audit findings to campus administration in exit conferences; participate in special projects and initiatives. Employ a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field with a minimum of five years auditing experience or a combination of education and experience as required by the Mississippi Internal Audit Act (MS Code 25-65-1 through 25-65-33).) Preferred experience with college/university audits, information system audits, and an advanced business degree, and/or professional certification as a CPA, CIA or CISA.
