|
|

- … so you can move on to the things you really want to do!
|
|
4
|
- The
- Center for Information Technology Services (CITS)
- is primarily responsible for the technology infrastructure at the
Academic Resort.

the Alcorn family
|
|

|
- A word about the Appropriate Use Policy
- You will want to read the Appropriate Use Policy in its entirety,
- but basically it says:
- I will use the technology at Alcorn for academic, intellectual pursuits
and for personal pleasure ONLY as appropriate in an academic setting.
- I will not intentionally destroy or misuse technology resources
- I will not allow another user to use my access privileges, nor will I
use the access privileges of another user
- I will not use technology resources for commercial or financial gain or
partisan political activities
- I understand that violation of these policies can result in suspension
or revoking of my privileges, and in some cases, criminal prosecution

- Connecting your computer to the network

|
- Q: What do I need to get connected to
the Internet?
- A: You will need –
|

|
- One of the most common mistakes that students make when they first try
to connect their computer to the internet is confusing the telephone
jack in the wall with their network jack. To clarify I submit the following:

|
- Q: How do I tell the difference between phone cable and Ethernet cable?
- A: Phone cable tends to be thin and flat instead of round like an
Ethernet cable, although this is not a certain way to distinguish the
two.
- A more certain way to distinguish phone from Ethernet cable is to look
at the plug on the end. A phone cable has a narrower (RJ-11) plug, and
there are only four wires which connect into the end. An Ethernet
cable's plug (RJ-45) is wider and has eight wires connecting into the
end. In addition, Ethernet cables will usually have the words CAT-5 or
CAT-5e stamped onto the cord.

|

|
- You can purchase a high quality, low cost network card that will work in
IBM-compatible PC’s equipped with a PCI bus from Wal-Mart or the campus
bookstore. The network card should come with software, instructions, and
the cable you will need to connect your computer to the network jack. An
Ethernet cable can be purchased from the Business Office for $15.00.
- If you are not sure whether your cable is a valid Ethernet cable, you
may bring the cable by the CITS Help Desk during our hours of operation
and a staff member will be happy to check the cable for you.

- Keep it up-to-date.
- Anti-virus programs can
only protect you from what they know about. Since new viruses surface
every day, it's very important for you to update your anti-virus program
regularly.
- Use it!
- An unused anti-virus
program is obviously useless. Use your anti-virus program to scan new
files you just downloaded and to do routine scans
- Don't rely on it.
- Modern anti-virus
programs detect malicious code quite reliably but it is very important
to remember that NO anti-virus program is perfect. No anti-virus program
on Earth can compensate for imprudence or unsafe software. No anti-virus
program will ever detect all viruses all the time.
- Use it intelligently.
Some anti-virus programs offer some questionable features and
gadgets. You shouldn't use a feature just "because it's
there". For example, AV scanner certification messages are
essentially useless and only serve to advertise AV software.
|
|

|
- 2. Keep your operating system and programs patched.
You are strongly advised to apply all security-related patches
for your software as they become available. You can use the Windows
Update and Office Update sites to keep your system up-to-date. Note that
they work with Internet Explorer only. You may have to lower your
Internet security settings in order for them to function correctly.
Don't forget to set your security preferences to a higher level again when
you are done.
