Mr. Emanuel F. Barnes

A Meridian native, Emanuel F. Barnes Sr. began his student affairs career at Alcorn State University in 1975 as a residence hall director. He has worked as an admission counselor/recruiter, director of admissions and recruiting, associate dean of students, dean of students, and deputy provost for student services.

While serving as dean of students, Barnes helped improve the quality of student life on campus by working to bring telephone and cable television service to residence hall rooms, implementing a student visitation policy, and introducing electronic voting to the student election process. When Alcorn moved to BANNER as its information management system, he developed the admissions and recruiting modules and helped develop the location management (building identification) module.

In addition to having enrollment management training, Barnes is certified in customer service, has served on several university-wide committees, and has co-chaired a successful NCAA certification process. As the primary designated school official (PDSO) for Alcorn, he is responsible for maintaining eligibility for the University to recruit and enroll international students as well as facilitating undergraduate international student compliance with INS regulations.

Barnes holds membership in professional, social, and civic organizations including the Southern Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers, Mississippi Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers, Claiborne County Democratic Executive Committee, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He represents Alcorn on the Port Gibson/Claiborne County Chamber of Commerce. He has B.S. and M.S. Ed degrees from Alcorn. Barnes is married to the former Sandra L. Williams, and they have five children.
