Project Accomplishments
Project Goals and Objectives

The main objectives were to expand and strengthen the mathematics and science content area necessary for teaching secondary mathematics, and to introduce online Internet technologies and resources to be used as tools in teaching mathematics and science. Participants were recruited from the population of mathematics and science teachers in Southwest Mississippi, mainly from thirteen school districts. Many of these schools had ratings which were lower than average. Teachers who had a stronger background in mathematics and science content were better able to contribute to the raising of school ratings. Moreover, teachers who were comfortable with computers and Internet usage are more likely to transfer those skills to their own students who will need those very skills to compete in today's world.

ABSTRACT

The new proposed institute for teachers at Alcorn State University is "Bridging the gap between Mathematics and Science using Online Resources". The project is designed to accomplish two main objectives:

  1. To expand and strengthen the mathematics and science contents necessary for teaching secondary mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

  2. To introduce computer software that makes extensive use of online technologies and resources as tools in teaching mathematics and science.

We will accomplish these objectives in twenty days in July 2002 with twenty participants using the computer program "StudyWorks Mathematics and Science Deluxe" The project targets the population of mathematics and science teachers in southwest Mississippi. Included in the area are: Amite County Schools, McComb Separate Schools, Brookhaven Schools, Claiborne County Schools, North Pike Consolidated Schools, Copiah County Schools, Franklin County Schools, Hazlehurst City Schools, South Pike Schools, Jefferson County Schools, Vicksburg-Warren Schools, Wilkinson County Schools, Lincoln County Schools, and Natchez-Adams Schools. These school districts have a continuous need for mathematics and science teachers who are not only well trained but are up to date on the pedagogy and technologies in current use. Most of these districts have a rating of three or below on a scale of five. The two main objectives of this project address both the needs.
