Endowed Professorships

The quality of instruction must be kept at a superior level in order that Alcorn students may learn based on sound scholarship and the latest scientific developments.

Through the endowment of a professorship, your name, or the name of someone you wish to memorialize, may be given enduring distinction identified with a particular field of study. The income from such an endowment enables the University to attract or hold the services of an outstanding teacher.

An endowed chair may be created by a gift or bequest from an individual, or derive support from an industrial corporation.

Scholarship Aid

With the rising cost of education, there is increasing need for scholarships in every department of the University. More than 20 separate funds of this kind have been established in the Foundation, and you may add to any of them with a gift of any size.

Some scholarships rest in particular departments; some honor faculty; many honor friends of the University. However, it is not necessary to specify a particular use for a gift in this area. You may simply mark your gift for the general scholarship fund with assurance that it will come to the aid of worthy students.

Following is the growing group list of endowed scholarships at ASU. You may contribute to any of them.

Matching Gifts

Modern corporations recognize their obligation to aid institutions of higher education if they are to have available an uninterrupted flow of trained personnel. Many of them have, in partial fulfillment of this obligation, adopted a matching gift plan of supporting education and, at the same time, building good relations with their employees. Under this plan, if an employee makes a gift to the university, the corporation matches the gift made by the employee, one for one, two for one or better. The donor should secure the company's matching gift form and send the completed form to the Foundation with the original contribution.

Other Endowed Funds

Establishing your own scholarship or fellowship can be a most rewarding way of giving - an opportunity to follow the course of a grateful beneficiary through his years at the University. Moreover, it is a simple, practical means of perpetuating a name on our campus.

Scholarships usually range from $100 to $2,000 in annual benefit; in some cases they are large enough to meet all of a student's expenses. You may set up your own specifications for your scholarship, following simple University rules.

Unrestricted Funds

Constant changes in the area of higher education, coupled with increased costs, have created new needs. Such needs are not provided for, either in the University budgets or by restricted gifts. This makes the unrestricted gift important to the University. It enables the board of directors of the Foundation in consultation with the President of the University to use the gift to fulfill the most pressing needs of the University for which no other money is available. This makes it possible for the University to maintain that balance of activities which is so essential to the building of a great institution.

Substantial gifts are essential to the future of Alcorn State University, but every gift of any sort is sincerely appreciated. How much you give for the benefit of the University is governed by the extent of your understanding of its need and your belief in its objectives, tempered by your personal circumstances.

Intellectual Renewal Grants

For Faculty - This is a grant made available from the Alcorn State University Foundation. Its objective is to give each faculty member a chance to engage in some intellectual activity for professional development. This includes travel to professional meetings and seminars; seed money to start a research project, especially for new faculty; money to defray publication costs; etc.  The proposed project must be consistent with the academic mission of the proposer’s department and the faculty member’s professional development plan.

For Staff  -  This is a grant made available from the Alcorn State University       Foundation. Its objective is to give each staff member, who has earned a masters degree, an opportunity to engage in an intellectual pursuit for professional development that will be centered around organizational transformation and financial reform with the intent to increase productivity. Grant funds can be used for travel cost to professional meetings and seminars, seed money to initiate staff development, and to defray publication cost.  The proposed activity must be consistent with the academic mission of the department’s institutional effectiveness plan. Each proposal will be competitively evaluated.  The successful proposals will illustrate the best unit enhancement, taking into consideration cost and implementation  strategies.
