SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES FALL 2008
ORIENTATION
Mission Statement: The central purpose of the Graduate School is to
provide for the advanced training of men and women and the promotion of
research which will contribute to knowledge in an atmosphere of freedom and
inquiry. Ten degree programs are offered through the School of Graduate
Studies: Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Business Administration, Executive Master of Business Administration,
Master of Science in Agriculture, Master of Science in Biology, Master of
Science in Computer and Information Sciences, Master of Science in
Education, Master of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Workforce
Educational Leadership, and Education Specialist in Elementary Education.

Points to Remember
- Students seeking a Masters degree MUST hold a Bachelor’s degree or
its equivalent from an accredited institution.
- Students seeking the Education Specialist in Elementary Education
must hold a Masters degree in Elementary Education or a related field.
- All application materials are due in the School of Graduate Studies
ON or BEFORE the admission deadline specified for that particular
semester.
- Admission deadlines are as follows: Fall - July 15 Spring - November
25
Summer I - April 25 Summer II - May 25
- All applicants MUST submit the following:
- A completed application of admissions.
- An official transcript of all academic work on the collegiate level.
The transcript must also provide evidence of an earned BA, BS or MS
degree and a satisfactory cumulative GPA.
- The results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate
Management Admission Test (GMAT).
- Two letters of recommendation.
- An application fee of $10.00 for out-of-state residents.
- Additional credentials required for Education Specialist and Nursing
program. (See ASU General Catalog)
In addition to the above criteria, ALL International students are
required to submit the following:
- The results of the official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
- A signed, notarized statement of financial support.
- Verification that the student's grade point average is at least a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is needed. Verification must be certified by a professional credential evaluation service. Applicants may select any National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member to provide this service. (See NACES web site, www.naces.org, for a list of NACES members.)
There are three (3) types of admissions:
- Unconditional Admission: The applicant has met all admissions
criteria.
- Special: The applicant does not meet standards for unconditional
admission and may be required to meet additional requirements in order
to be considered to regular admissions (i.e., complete additional
undergraduate course work and demonstrate superior scholastic ability
while completing the first nine hours of course work).
- Non-Degree: The applicant does not wish to pursue the Masters
degree, but rather he or she is enrolling in courses to transfer to
another institution, for academic enhancement, or for certification
purposes.
- Graduate students must assume full responsibility for knowledge of
the rules and regulations of the university and the departmental
requirements concerning individual degree programs. Since requirements
and programs are subject to change, students at all times should be
aware of current regulations (ASU General Catalog).
PROPOSED PROGRAM OF STUDY FORM
All graduate students must complete a proposed program of studies sheet
and have it
filed in the office of the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. The sheet
must include the courses to be taken, the student's signature, the student's
advisory committee chairperson's signature, and the dean's signature. Any
transfer courses approved by the student's advisor should also be on this
form.
