Greetings!
On behalf of the entire University
Community it is with great enthusiasm
that I bring greetings to all
prospective graduate students.
Alcorn
State University, established in 1871, has
the distinction of being the first
historically Black land-grant institution
and the first state-supported institution
for the higher education of Blacks in the
United States.
The more than 3,000 student body is
predominantly Black; however, it includes
Caucasian, Asian, African, and West Indian
Students.
The
student population is composed of
approximately sixty percent female and forty
percent male.
Situated on 1700 acres and known as
“A Campus of Excellence,” Alcorn has
attracted students from all 82 counties in
Mississippi, 42 other states, and from 18
foreign countries.
The School of Graduate Studies was initiated in 1975 and at that time
offered the Master of Science degree in the disciplines of Elementary
Education and Secondary Education.
Currently, graduate degree programs
at the Master’s and Specialist level emphasize Biological Sciences,
Computer and Information Sciences, Business, Agriculture, Education,
and Nursing.
As prospective graduate students you
are about to take an important step on your
career journey.
The decision to attend Graduate
School is a crucial point in your career
path. Among
the many factors to consider is the quality
of the programs and the faculty.
The Alcorn faculty is both
international and cosmopolitan.
Graduate Studies faculty members hold
doctorates and other credentials from some
of the leading colleges and universities in
the nation as well as the world.
Graduates of our programs can be
found in almost every field of human
endeavor.
As we move into the new millennium
and beyond, the university also will
continue to place emphasis on strengthening
its current programs in Technology, Science,
Education, Agriculture, Nursing, Business,
Computer and Informational Sciences; and
developing new programs in the areas of
need.
