SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES

School of Graduate Studies, 1000 ASU Drive 689, Alcorn State, MS 39096

Greetings!

On behalf of the entire University Community it is with great enthusiasm that I bring greetings to all prospective graduate students. Alcorn State University, established in 1871, has the distinction of being the first historically Black land-grant institution and the first state-supported institution for the higher education of Blacks in the United States.  The more than 3,000 student body is predominantly Black; however, it includes Caucasian, Asian, African, and West Indian Students.

The student population is composed of approximately sixty percent female and forty percent male.  Situated on 1700 acres and known as “A Campus of Excellence,” Alcorn has attracted students from all 82 counties in Mississippi, 42 other states, and from 18 foreign countries. The School of Graduate Studies was initiated in 1975 and at that time offered the Master of Science degree in the disciplines of Elementary Education and Secondary Education.  Currently, graduate degree programs at the Master’s and Specialist level emphasize Biological Sciences, Computer and Information Sciences, Business, Agriculture, Education, and Nursing.

As prospective graduate students you are about to take an important step on your
career journey.  The decision to attend Graduate School is a crucial point in your career path.  Among the many factors to consider is the quality of the programs and the faculty.  The Alcorn faculty is both international and cosmopolitan.  Graduate Studies faculty members hold doctorates and other credentials from some of the leading colleges and universities in the nation as well as the world.  Graduates of our programs can be found in almost every field of human endeavor.  As we move into the new millennium and beyond, the university also will continue to place emphasis on strengthening its current programs in Technology, Science, Education, Agriculture, Nursing, Business, Computer and Informational Sciences; and developing new programs in the areas of need.
