Rest Durations
Silence is just as important as pitch in music. Special symbols are used to indicate durations of
silence or rest in music.

Whole Rest |
Half Rest |
Quarter Rest |
Eighth Rest |
Sixteenth Rest |

 |
The duration values of rests are equal to their note counterparts.
A whole rest receives the same duration as a whole note and a half rest receives the same
duration as a half note, etc.
Dotted Rests
Just as notes can be dotted, so can rests.
|
Dotted Half Rest |
Dotted Quarter Rest |
Dotted Eighth Rest |
 |
 |
 |
Placing a dot after the notehead adds half the value of the rest. A dotted rest can
be divided into three values.
A dotted rest can be divided into two equal values, each of which is
a dotted rest.
