Lorman, Miss. (October 4, 2013) - “Collaborating to Train a New Generation of Social Workers” is the theme of an upcoming 42nd Annual Alabama/Mississippi Social Work Education Conference that the Alcorn State University Department of Social Work will host at the Alcorn School of Business, Natchez campus, October 17 – 18, 2013.
“We are very excited and look forward to the event for which we expect 250-300 participants,” said Dr. Dorothy A. Idleburg, professor and chair, Department of Social Work. “We are cordially inviting faculty, staff, students, social workers and other professionals from Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana.”
The opening session will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 17, in the School of Business Auditorium. The opening session speaker will be Dr. Derek Greenfield, director of Educational Equity & Inclusion and assistant professor of sociology. His presentation is ‘Today is the First Day of the Rest of Your Life: Believe and Achieve.’
There will be over 40 sessions on the following topics: response to the immigration laws, responding to disasters: natural and man-made, technology in the classroom and beyond, job market preparation for students, licensure preparation, accreditation, EPAS, and core competencies, for example, what field directors and instructors need to know. Also discussed will be the topics of social networking in the school and the workplace, legislation - immigration, gender biases and women’s reproductive rights, ethical issues, and trends/transitions in use of spirituality in social work practice.
The conference will honor Social Work Educators of the Year, one from Mississippi and one from Alabama, as well as one Field Coordinator of the Year from each of the two states.
The conference will present the following awards to students:
The Frank Egan Award will be presented to an undergraduate student selected for presentation at the Conference. Two awards of $100.00 each will be awarded to students from the two participating states.
Beulah R. Compton Award will be presented to a graduate student (master of social work only) selected for presentation at the Conference. Two awards of $100.00 each will be awarded to students from the two participating states.
All social work students selected for the poster exhibit will receive a recognition certificate. The student recipient of Outstanding Bachelor Student Social Work Poster will receive a $50.00 award, and the master’s level student recipient of Outstanding Master Student Social Work Poster will receive a $100.00 award in addition to the recognition certificate.
