Giving back, Alcorn Graduate Maury Gusta on the Today Show

Maury Gusta

Alcorn State, MS (November 4, 2009) — Gautier Elementary teacher Maury Gusta ‘08 will appear on the Today Show on Thursday, November 5, 2009 to discuss the importance of reaching academic goals and giving back to the community.  Gusta was in a devastating car accident in 2007, he suffered serious injuries — breaking several bones in his face, both jawbones and his leg.  He was in the hospital for 10 days and a week after being discharged; he took the Praxis 2 exam and passed.

“I have always wanted to help students achieve greatness, no matter their circumstances,” says Gusta.  “I knew I was meant to be a teacher and my experiences support the importance of academic goals and giving back to others.”

After graduating from Alcorn, Gusta accepted a fourth grade teaching position with Gautier Elementary and founded the National Elementary Honor Society for fourth- and fifth-grade students who maintain a 3.0 GPA and perform community service.

Gusta entered an essay contest, “Everyone Has a Story” hosted by the Today show, to share his story.  10 students who are original members of the National Elementary Honor Society will make the all expense paid trip to New York City with Gusta.

“I count it a blessing to do what I love, everyday,” explains Gusta.  “Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders.  Helping others allows us to grow – our students know the importance of nursing home visits and raising money to support the Ronald McDonald Home in Alabama. ”

His sister, Elexes Gusta attends Alcorn State.
