Coach Kevin Montgomery and his SWAC champion Alcorn State Lady Braves softball team of 2010 will receive their championship rings Monday, February 7, 2011, at halftime of the Braves vs. Grambling State basketball game.

The Lady Braves won five straight games in the SWAC tournament to emerge with the championship. They beat Texas Southern 3-2, Jackson State 6-3, Grambling State twice at 13-1 and then 11-3, and beat Mississippi Valley State 6-3 in the championship game.

Coach Montgomery, gaining his first championship as coach of the Lady Braves, had this to say, “First off, it’s great to be recognized as a champion. It took a lot of work and perseverance on and off the field to make the softball program successful, and our goal is to do the same thing this season.”

Montgomery thinks the return of several players makes the Lady Braves contenders again in 2011, “We have a veteran ball club who have been through the trials and tribulations and know what it takes to win. The freshmen know that with hard work and determination we can defend our crown, staying at that top level.”

ASU starts its regular season at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia on February 10, 2011, against Mercer University in the Tiny Laster HBCU Invitational.
