Alcorn’s Ruffin Co-SWAC POW
Alcorn State junior point guard Kiara Ruffin of Southeast High in Meridian, Mississippi, has been named SWAC Co-player of the Week, sharing the honor with Southern’s Freda Allen.
In two games in the past week, a 75-74 loss to MVSU and a 70-68 win over UAPB, Ruffin, known as ‘Lucy’ to her teammates, averaged 28 points, 7 steals and 4.5 rebounds per game.
Ruffin shot 51 percent from the field and 54 percent from three point range. She had a league high nine steals in the loss to Mississippi Valley and scored 30 in the win over UAPB, including two free throws with 10 seconds left that provided the winning margin.
On the season, Ruffin is averaging 17.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 2.9 steals and shoots 80 percent from the charity lane.
Head coach Tonya Edwards, who’s Lady Braves are 8-5 and fourth in SWAC standings, said this about Ruffin’s award, “It’s a great honor for her to again be rewarded by the SWAC for her contributions to the team. She deserves it and her numbers definitely speak volumes.”
Ruffin has won the award on two other occasions as has teammate shooting guard Carolinsia Crumbly of Laurel, Mississippi.
The Lady Braves will host Alabama A&M Saturday, February 19 at 2:30, and then host Alabama State Monday, February 21 at 5:30 in the Davey L. Whitney Complex. During the contest again A&M, survivors of breast cancer will be celebrated.
