Alcorn president prepared to abstain from vote against Jackson State Athletics

Alcorn State, MS (June 9, 2011) – Alcorn State University’s 18th President M. Christopher Brown II says he is prepared to abstain from voting today “to ban or not to ban” Jackson State and Southern from the SWAC football championship game if the issue comes before the Council of Presidents and Chancellors in their Spring Meeting today.

Both Universities received postseason bans for low APR – Academic Performance Rate from NCAA, but that ban does not include the title game played by the SWAC. The SWAC does not participate in the NCAA playoffs. The APR report is a four-year average based predictor of athlete’s graduation success and other factors.

“Alcorn State University, like member institutions, believes that student athletes must excel in the classroom. Alcorn State is willing to share proven strategies that will help strengthen athletic programs, ” says President Brown. “As a presidential colleague and an Institutional Executive Officer (IEO) of one of Mississippi's institutions of higher learning, I would never judge a member institution.  Even more given the classic rivalry between Alcorn and our younger peer JSU, it would be inappropriate to vote on their situation.”
