Edwards Basketball Camp stresses importance of healthy nutrition

The purpose of the first basketball camp held by Alcorn State Head Women’s Basketball Coach Tonya Edwards from June 20th to 23rd, was not only to teach all players the fundamental skills needed to play basketball, but introduce them to the basics of nutrition as well.

During the program, the participants acquired skills in ball handling, shooting, defense, passing and team play. Last day of camp was devoted to freethrow shooting contests, regular shooting contests, 1 on 1 games, 3 on 3 games and 5 on 5 games as well.

“It was a teaching camp that also emphasized the fun of playing the game,” said Coach Edwards. “Hopefully things that we did in camp will improve their seasons at the schools that they are attending.”

Edwards added, “The camp also emphasized the importance of eliminating childhood obesity. We had ASU Extension staff to come in everyday to talk to them about finding healthy alternatives in eating habits.”

Those who lectured the students on nutrition were Shirley Middleton, Linda Catchings, Edith Ezekwe and Cassandra Peters. The items discussed were: avoiding dehydration, eating certain foods in moderation, balancing their diet and providing a “broad spectrum” of nutrients to nourish their bodies. Coach Edwards said, “They obtained valuable information on how to avoid obesity and stay healthy that they can share with their families.”

Moses Dupre, ASU’s compliance officer, shared information on qualifying, clearing house procedures and other related items with the students interested in college athletic.

Camp staff included assistant coaches Cleo Foster and India Bruster, SWAC MVP Kiara Ruffin, and teammates Isis Smith, Rosemane Ambroise and Cheetara Johnson.

Camp participants, girls and boys ages from 11 to 17, were Patresa Myles, Cammie Berry, Reagan Tinner, Daniele Beckworth, Diamond Smith, Deanna Hayden, Deja Harris, Lyde’sha Noble, Gabrielle Ambeau, Armand Williams, Shauntina Collier, Kristen Sampson, Shakeria Kelly, Alyssa Stamps, Jasmine Stamps, Ariyanna Mason, Jade Cosey, Courtney McGowan and April Levy.
