USNS Medgar Evers time capsule to include Alcorn memorabilia
November 8, 2011 – Mrs. Myrlie Evers will attend the christening of the USNS Medgar Evers, a 689-foot dry cargo ship named in honor of her late husband on November 12, in San Diego. She notified Alcorn President M. Christopher Brown II that precious Alcorn State University memorabilia belonging to alumnus Medgar Wiley Evers ’52 will be included in the vessel’s time capsule.
“What items do you include? It has been a real struggle, a joyous and emotional decision for my family,” says Mrs. Evers. “I fell in love with Medgar ‘beneath the shades of giant trees’ on the campus of Alcorn State University. He was hard at work even then educating us on racial injustices.”
“The Alcorn family is indeed touched,” says President Brown. “No words can truly explain how proud we are of the legacy of Medgar Wiley Evers. We join Mrs. Evers in her quest to make certain all Americans and the world not only remember but understand the altruistic sacrifices Medgar Evers made for all of us.”
