Soil
erosions : The
2501 project efforts in addressing the problem of
Soil erosion is basically designed due to many farm
being depleted in Organic-matter content which is important in
crop production. Of land used for crop production, over
50,000,000 have been rendered useless to for crop production
and a like number is approaching that amount. It is said and
very truthfully said, that a very few farm that wind and water
does not affect soil
or crops. This is a very serious issue for small farmer in
Mississippi. We know that because of erosion, a large share of
the soil lost is surface plow area which contains the highest
percentage of many of the essential plant food element which
are found in the finer
soil. The effect
are easily detected through the extensive farm and home visit
and viewing the
dramatic change in colors and lower productivity than the
surrounding soils. The Specialist are working closely with
Farmers, NRCS, Forest Service and Forest Commission in the
selected covered counties in taking a closer look at the
erosion situation and how it has a great effect on Agriculture
land. Working closely with the soil related agencies to assist
in implementing workshop, field tours, small farmers
conferences, handing out of soil erosion written material of
collaborative agencies that express the seriousness of erosion
and what step the farmers could do to address the problem on
his farm. This is an on going issue and were now at present
sitting down with Soil Scientist at Alcorn State University to
address this state wide soil erosion campaign issues for
Limited Resource Farmers.
Water
Quality : The
2501 project have been working closely with small farmers in
the area of Water Quality in addressing the need for
irrigation and agriculture pursuit. The efforts are looked at
more lately with the decrease in traditional crops prices.
There is a steady increase in Alternative crop due to
recommendation 2501 Specialist recommendation. Through the
efforts of the
visits and workshop on alternative crop, site selection,
variety selection as well as tours of alternative crop fields
from prior season, the number of alternative crop acres has
increase which increased the need for irrigation systems,
water management as well as the quality. The need for
irrigation for these crops are almost imperative for a
productive year of a of alternative crops. The alternative
crops goes from traditional cotton and soy bean to sweet
potatoes, pies and , okra, peppers, greens, water melon,
squash and other alternative crop that would have a better
chance at survival with the changes in climate through the
growing season.
The
project is working closely at present with the Choctaw
Community in Shaw, Ms with the construction of a new
sewer system that schedule to start soon. We will also
assist with home construction that will equip their home for
the new system through home repair loan and grants application
for the elderly through the housing specialist for the
project.
