Dorris Smith

A native of Monticello (Lawrence County) Mississippi, Dorris A. Collins-Smith received her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Alcorn State University in 1968. She received a Master of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education from University of Southern Mississippi in 1982 and a Specialist degree in Early Childhood from William Carey University in 2005.

Smith’s professional career spans over 40 years in the Covington County School District. She spent 24 years as a home economics teacher; 10 years as a vocational clothing instructor; 10 years as a special education instructor and three years as a child care instructor. Additionally, she works with the Millcreek Behavioral Science Community and is an interior decorator, home and garden consultant, adult clothing construction teacher and consultant, and the owner of D and K Designs.

Smith volunteers her time as a character building and life science instructor with the Boys and Girls Club of Covington County. She is a member of the Covington County Breast Cancer Awareness Committee; chairperson for the Town of Mt. Olive Pink Day; a member of the Covington County Archive Committee; an ACT Workshop Organizer/Tutor; is president of the Home Mission Society; chairperson of Christian Youth, and a member of the Town of Mt. Olive Beautification and Historical Committee. Additionally, she is a member of the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church; Alcorn State University National Alumni Association; Covington County Alcorn Alumni Association and a life supporter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Smith has numerous awards and commendations for her tireless work in her profession and community service, including: Member of the Alcorn Golden Class (2019), Teacher of the Year, Instructor of the Year, Advisor for the Federal Housing Administration – HERO Chapter, as well as certificates of appreciation from various organizations.

She is married to Kenneth R. Smith and they have two daughters, Dr. Kimberly Smith-Russ and Dr. Denea Antrice Smith. She resides in Mt. Olive, Mississippi.
