Dr. Sandra Barnes



Dr. Barnes is a native of Taylorsville, Mississippi.She completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Alcorn State University (ASU) and Ph.D. in Bioanalytical Chemistry from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas (KU). She completed Post-Doctoral training in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at KU and a Post-Graduate Certification in Academic Leadership from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Washington D.C.She joined The Biotechnology Center at ASU as a research assistant professor and worked on research involving development of analytical methods for detection of antioxidant compounds in sweet potatoes.She also worked on methods for the development of insect resistant sweet potato varieties.She joined the Department of Chemistry and Physics as an Assistant Professor and continued to work on development of analytical methods for detection of a variety of analytes.She has received grant funding as PI or CoPI totaling over 2 million dollars.When she became Associate Professor, her focus became STEM education research.Currently, she is Professor and Chair and her research involves development and training of faculty in active learning techniques.
